Ayrstone AyrMesh Hub Review

Ayrstone AyrMesh Hub
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Purchased this Wireless product and it took some doing placing the antenna on a roof mast and routing the cable down to connect to my office router. So when I got the Internet Signal at our cabin in the trees about a quarter mile away it was truly a rewarding experience.
Despite a clause in the Terms & Conditions for service fees, I was assured by the owner that this was intended for future products and not for the Ayre-Mesh Hub System.
Product Support is excellent and available quickly with some real congenial folks.
Forgot to purchase the cable necessary to mount the antenna so that delayed things a bit, and I have to check into lightening rods and protecting my computer from an errant lightening bolt strike, but guess it comes with the territory.
Another great feature is the ability to separate my home/office network from the public use easily by creating a separate name for the public network.
All in all a satisfying and cost effective solution to extending rural networks.

The AyrMesh Hub is the "building block" for the AyrMesh network. The first AyrMesh Hub (called the "Gateway") is connected to your existing high-speed internet connection (router) and distributes it via Wi-Fi up to half a mile away. Additional AyrMesh Hubs (called "Remotes") can then be deployed as to extend your network even further. All AyrMesh Hubs are automatically self-configuring using information from the AyrMesh Portal. If you are ordering the AyrMesh Hub as a Gateway (the first AyrMesh Hub, connected to your router) or you need to mount it further from your power outlet, make sure you order an Ethernet cable (or make your own Ethernet cable) long enough to reach from where it is mounted to the power supply. Belkin Share N300 Wireless N Router Review

Belkin Share N300 Wireless N Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this on Black Friday 2010 for $29.99. The price was great and the router came with one USB port. I use a USB hub to connect two devices to the router: a laser printer (Brother DCP-1000) and an external hard drive (Western Digital 1 TB). I tested both devices by printing a one-page document while watching a 700 MB .avi file. They both worked fine.
Unfortunately, I do not own any wireless devices that use 802.11n standard. I thought my laptops and Droid X would benefit from a wireless router that broadcasts on b/g/n, but the performance and range were no better than when I was on my wireless G router (Netgear WGR614).

Wireless Routers Extend Range Antenna For Linksys DLink Review

I thought that I could just screw this onto the back of Linksys wireless router(replacing the antenna).
This antenna has some sort of base(and it can't be removed from it, like it can't be unscrewed). . .i think it's for a wireless card, not a router.
I repeat! This is NOT the item in the picture.

Shipping was super fast and it was boxed and packed well. So far the reception is really good and a BIG improvement over the airport. Construction looks good as well. I only gave this 4 stars for one reason. The thing that got 4 stars was the software came on a mini-disc and since I am using a Macbook I had to find a desktop and find the file, email it to myself and continue with the install. They do have software on their site but it looks like the disk was a newer version. Once that was done it linked right up and gave me a definite signal improvement. I am in a remote area and I am going to do some more signal testing but so far I am happy with it.The tripod legs extend which is not really apparent when you look at them. They need to be extended all the way for stability. I got to test it last night at a site I have been to before with just a USB dongle. Before I could only receive a signal with about 10% strength. When I put this antenna on it got 98%! That was to a wifi hotspot about 1/3 of a mile away.Inside my office building my Macbook would only show about 75% signal to a router about 20ft away as it goes through several walls. With the TurboTenna I get 100% signal no matter which way it is pointed. All in all I think it is great so far and I can't wait to test it more. I think in time this will actually pay for itself by allowing me to connect to free hotspots instead of paying for wifi,

Apple Time Capsule MB765LL/A 1TB Review

Apple Time Capsule MB765LL/A 1TB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned the Apple Time Capsule 1TB model for several months now.
Pros:
1. Very large 1TB hard drive
2. Very fast WiFi connections
3. Easily sets up with your network (what Mac product doesn't?)
4. Much faster on my DSL network than the DSL wireless router I had previously connected
Cons:
1. Extremely SLOW data transfer. I'm not exaggerating when I say it took 15hrs to backup a wired connection with about 250gb of data to transfer...... wireless backup of that amount of data wasn't even reasonable, it was going to be several days.
2. I had wanted to use it for my iTunes library. To share my library on several devices when my Macbook was not available. Turns out the transfer speed is too slow for this purpose and I had to scratch that idea.
3. At times, it's been too slow to even use for Time Machine. The problem lies with the hard drive it seems since the wireless connection is extremely fast. Maybe there is some issue with the way the Time Capsule communicates with it's hard drive? I don't know, I only know it's painfully slow.
lf this can only be used as a wireless network hub and painfully slow backups, then there are better options out there. If Apple can somehow get this thing to work as advertised, then it might be worth a look. The way it is now... NOT RECOMMENDED!

AirLink101 AWLL6075 Wireless N Mini USB Adapter Review

AirLink101 AWLL6075 Wireless N Mini USB Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For those of you using Windows or Mac OS X, I have no idea how this thing works. I am writing this for those who may be interested in using it on Linux.
I got this because the price couldn't be beat for the feature set. While USB Wi-Fi adapters tend to be much cheaper than their PCMCIA counterparts, this one has an especially good feature set for the price I paid. And it is not nearly so massive as the others I have seen.
I ordered this based on reviews of a different version of the AirLink101. The numbers following ("AWLL6075") are important in determining compatibility. Turns out the model AWLL3026 works out of the box with modern Linux distributions. However, no driver has been written to support the AWLL6075.
I tried using the supplied drivers with ndis wrapper. I could talk to the device, and it reported finding hotspots, but it never connected. Perhaps others may have more luck with this approach, but I wanted to let other Linux users who were considering this option that this is not yet a simple plug-n-play solution as I had anticipated due to my inadequate research.
I will write again if support gets added to update my experience.

Cisco WAP4410N Wireless-N Access Point - PoE/Advanced Security Review

Cisco WAP4410N Wireless-N Access Point - PoE/Advanced Security
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased two of these Cisco WAP4410N WAPs. The goal was to help my brother-in-law cover his large home with good quality wireless. Based on my experience doing previous WAP installations, my guess was that is would take between three and six WAPs to full cover his large house (which has lots of brick and steel) with good quality coverage. I was impressed that by strategically positioning the units I was able to cover the entire house with only two of these WAPs. The coverage consisted of three floors (one was a finished basement).
The setup of these units was simple, the firmware is stable, and configuration was straight=forward. Since they were setup they have worked flawlessly and required no further attention.
The only thing a bit unusual (for those used to Netgear, Linksys, etc.) is that you have to setup a Cisco account (no charge just register online) to be able to download firmware, etc. This ended being unnecessary because the firmware in the unit was up-to-date.
If you're looking for really good WAPs that support Wireless-N and have lots of configuration options (e.g., Mesh, Multiple SSIDs, etc.) I highly recommend this unit. It has a slightly higher price than other (consumer units) you can buy, but it definitely deserves the "business-class" label that Cisco gives it.

TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N Gigabit Router Review

TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N Gigabit Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this to replace belkin wireless N+ router (you can see my review for the belkin N+). The signal from may laptops to belkin would vary between 1Mbps - 48Mbps, and often losing the signal all together. This is with using built in wireless G. I added belkin wireless N adapter and signal would then range from 11Mbps - 120Mbps, but far fewer drops. I replaced with this TP-Link TL-WR1043 and after 1 week, I get no wireless drop outs at all. My laptop with built in wireless G consistently reports 54Mbps and my laptop with the belkin N adapter generally reports 120Mbps (sometimes dropping to 60Mbps, sometimes as high as 150Mbps).
I should note that the TP-Link router is in the same exact location where my old belkin was, and my laptops are in the same exact location. So I have not varied distance nor obstacles between router & laptops. My laptops are ~75 feet from router in separate building, nearest neighbor ~.75 miles, so no change in interference from neighbors.
Now if only I could figure out how to get 300Mbps. I have tried from several other locations, but best I ever get is 150Mbps. But as this greatly exceeds my connection to ISP, it is not really a big issue. Oddly enough, if I move closer to the router, I get slower connection (~30Mbps) with N adapter but still get 54Mbps with build-in wireless G adapter.

Wireless Extenders zBoost YX540 METRO Dual-Band Cell Phone Signal Booster (Black/Grey) Review

Wireless Extenders zBoost YX540 METRO Dual-Band Cell Phone Signal Booster (Black/Grey)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I live in an area that is about equidistant between cell towers. My best signal strength in the house is 2 bars or less. I lost calls all the time, sometimes just because I pivoted while talking and placed my head between the phone and the tower. The lower level of the house is partially sub-grade and I can never rely on maintaining a connection.
This extender has solved all the above problems. I have a clear conversation now, but no increase in cell strength (still 2 bars), When I turned it on, the phone showed no bars and thought I was too close to the repeater, but reception was clear. Routine contacts have commented that my voice is not choppy as it was before. I can definitely recommend this product's signal boosting capacity.
INSTALLATION: Windows on 2 sides of the house showed the same cell strength. I chose one that was the easiest to string cable along the wall and placed the transmitter as close to mid-house as possible. I placed the antenna as high in the window as possible. Do clean the window before mounting the antenna. It took less than 10 minutes to unpack and install. The hardest part was unraveling the coaxial cable. Instructions are short and clear. The trouble shooting table consists mainly of being certain to have more than 8 feet between the antenna and the transmitter, otherwise they interfere with each other.

What's in the Box
zBoost Metro YX540 amplifier base unit, power supply, base unit antenna, coaxial cable (RG59-mini), signal antenna and mounting hardware

Setup Overview
Before placing a zBoost Metro in your home, make sure that you can place calls near the window or wherever you plan to place the Signal Antenna. zBoost can only bring signal into your home when signal reaches the Signal Antenna.

Using your cell phone, place a call near this location to confirm that enough signal is present to complete the call. If you can reliably make and receive calls at that location then zBoost can bring the signal into your home. If only one signal bar is displayed on your cell phone, indoor coverage will be limited to one small room.

Proceed through the following steps to set up the zBoost Metro:

Place the Signal Antenna on the interior of a window located in the area of best signal.
Determine the location that provides the strongest signal using the signal strength indicator on your cell phone. Find the location on the window that provides the most bars of signal strength. Before proceeding, make sure that the intended surface is clean and clear of any dust. Then choose the suction cup attachments appropriate for your setting (short or long), fasten to the Signal Antenna, and secure to your window.

In order to capture the strongest signal, you may do one or all of the following:

Move the antenna around the window--higher is usually better.
Use the long suction cup attachments provided, in order to create a greater angle in which to capture the signal. The suction cups must be vertical on the window.
For best performance keep the Signal Antenna 2 feet from any metal.

Place the zBoost Base Unit where you want to create a Cell Zone
Connect the Base Unit Antenna and coax to the Base Unit and place it where you need signal. For the widest possible signal area, it is recommended that you position the Base Unit near the middle of a room or mount it on an interior wall. This Base Unit uses an omni-directional antenna that delivers signal in a circular pattern around the antenna. The zBoost Metro does not require vertical separation; however, the Signal Antenna and Base Unit Antenna should have at least 8 feet of horizontal separation. Increasing separation of the 2 antennas will optimize zBoost performance.

The Base Unit can be mounted either directly on a wall or placed on a flat surface (e.g., a bookshelf, desk, end table, etc.). For best results, keep the Base Unit off the floor and at least 2 feet away from other cords, metal objects or other wireless devices such as wireless routers or wireless access points. The zBoost Metro performs best when there are no obstructions between the zBoost Base Unit and your mobile device.

Run the provided coaxial cable between the Base Unit and Signal Antenna
Use the provided RG-59 (mini) coaxial cable to connect the Signal Antenna and the Base Unit. Coaxial connections can loosen when the cable is moved. Be sure the connections stay hand-tight.

Connect the zBoost Base Unit to the provided power supply and plug into a power outlet
Upon initial power up, a solid green LED should appear indicating normal conditions. If a red light appears, adjustments may be needed.

The Linksys WRT51AB does not deliver at all. Using the 802.11A radio, we've experienced nothing but lockups. The router locks up which then locks up the computers attached to the point the keyboard and mouse do not respond. With the cards set for ad-hoc and the router unplugged, the network runs fine. Three months of constant contact with Tech Support has netted us repeated canned responses that do not resolve the issue. Please, do not buy this product. The Linksys A+B dual-band wireless broadband router is like four devices in one box. The router function lets you securely share one high-speed Internet connection among your entire network, while the four-port, full-duplex 10/100 Mbps switch jump-starts your wired Ethernet network. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need.
The router also contains two wireless access points, which let you connect with wireless networked PCs using either the popular 2.4 GHz 802.11b standard at 11 Mbps, or the almost five-times-faster 5 GHz 802.11a standard. Since both standards are built in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b equipment today, and migrate to the 802.11a standard as your needs grow.
In addition to up to 152-bit encryption of wireless transmissions, the A+B dual-band wireless broadband router supports the industrial-strength wireless security of 802.1x authentication and authorization. The router also serves as a DHCP server, has NAT technology to protect against Internet intruders, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. Configuration is a snap with the Web browser-based configuration utility.
With the Linksys A+B dual-band wireless broadband router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multiplayer games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need.

This product works flawlessly straight out of the box. The installation was a snap. It works best with the small usb extension provided. I use it with an old Dell laptop to connect it to my new D-Link615 router. It connects my network between two buidings separated by a small area of tropical rain forest, a distance of more than three hundred feet, and through three concrete walls.I like the AES encryption for the enhanced security. This has got to be the best product for the price. I was really impressed with the performance..

Having used Linksys routers for the last 10 years the performance of this wireless router does not live up to past performance. This is not a plug and go router. Although I live in apartment which is only 900 square feet, there is no spot in the apartment which can easily connect to the router.
I turn on my computer, my computer sees the router and then says it cannot connect. I am running on XP and my previous Linksys router accept any of the 5 computers I have in my apartment. The main issue is connecting to the router. Although I loaded the software provided, I constantly have to "repair" the connection to initially connect to the router. Often that does not work! I have to go to the router, unplug it and then plug it in again and then I can connect. I use several different computers and this issue is with every model I have: IBM laptop, Dell desktop, Sony Viao and a new HP laptop.
Once connected, it maintains connection about 85% of the time and you can use a USB thumb drive to port the setting quickly and easily to other computers. It is also small and flat in overall profile.
I would not recommend this device to anyone else. I will probably have to buy another router.

AmbiCom WL300N-AR Wireless 802.11b/g/n 300 Mbps Cable/DSL Router Review

AmbiCom WL300N-AR Wireless 802.11b/g/n 300 Mbps Cable/DSL Router

First problem was my mistake. I was looking for a DSL modem/router combo and did not read the description well enough. However, I was able to easilly set it up as an access point and connect it to my current DSL Modem/Router combo. I turned off the wireless features from the old router and everything works fine for me in that regard.
300 Mbps? Not so sure about that. All of my current 802.11n wireless cards have the most recent firmware and drivers and the best I can get is 150 Mbps about a foot away from the router. Ten feet away, it drops off to about 135 Mbps and in the worst case scenario, its still better than my wireless G that I used to use. However, I bought this for the ability to stream multimedia throughout my house and my 802.11n equipped media extender is still connecting at less than desireable speeds.
Another issue that I had (and it was not mentioned in the documentation for the router OR the documentation for two of my HP laptops) is that YOU NEED to change your wireless security settings to WPA2. I was using WPA and could only connect at a max 54 Mbps. Apparently it is a problem with some routers and wireless cards that use the Ateros chipset. Neither HP, nor ambicom were able to resolve the issue and HP even sent a new WiFi card for my laptop thinking that would fix the problem. A bit of googling informed me about the slower speed issues and changing to WPA2 fixed the problem. HP support is now aware of the issue and has even thanked me for informing them of how I resolved the issue.
Is it better than what I had before? Yes. Is it as good as I expected? No, not yet. Hopefully a firmware update will resolve some of the speed issues and I'll be able to get the full 300Mbps (Yes, I have it set up to run "n" only and have no g devices on my network.)

Airlink AP311W 802.11G Universal Wireless Repeater Review

Airlink AP311W 802.11G Universal Wireless Repeater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this product to extend the range on an 802.11g network from an AT&T router to allow internet access in a back bedroom. Despite hours of trying to set it up, including hours on the phone with tech support, it would never work. It kept trying to use WPA encryption when the access point was only using WEP 64 bit encryption. I kept getting error messages that this repeater could not be used on this network. Tech support then kept telling me the problem was the router, and to call AT&T and have them reconfigure it. That was despite the fact that I have over ten other devices, including laptops, desktops, iphones, PDA's, etc. that access that network with no problem. Big help that was. I then took it to another house that just had 802.11b network, with no encryption. I thought maybe I could use it on this simple system. Same problem. It would never hook up. I put WEP encryption on the router but it would still never work. Tech support had me picking up my desktop computer and hauling it over to the router and running back and forth and all of it was gibberish. The "Indian" connection with the language difficulties did not help either. Save your money. This is a piece of junk.

Netgear MR814 802.11b Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router Review

Netgear MR814 802.11b Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've replaced my Linksys BEFW11S4 router with Netgear MR814, and I have not been disappointed. MR814 has a better range, better user interface, and several features missing from the Linksys model.
Setup was very easy - Netgear setup wizard even recognized the type of the broadband connection I have (PPPoE-based DSL). The manual includes a handy table with settings for many US ISPs. Wireless LAN was also up and running in no time.
I have no complains about the router operation so far. It's does not drop my PPPoE connection, and is generally *not noticeable* - just like a router should be.
Features that make this router stand out in the crowded field of wireless routers: 24x7 tech support and 3yr. warranty, parental controls plus free Zero Knowledge Freedom Personal Firewall software (one-year license for up to 8 computers), and ability to update your dynamic ip address in DynDNS.org database automatically (very handy if you need to connect to your home computer).
The only downside I can think of is the size. The unit is larger than many comparable routers, although it is not as tall as others, and can be positioned vertically with the included stand, or mounted on the wall.
