Ayrstone AyrMesh Hub Review

Ayrstone AyrMesh Hub
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Purchased this Wireless product and it took some doing placing the antenna on a roof mast and routing the cable down to connect to my office router. So when I got the Internet Signal at our cabin in the trees about a quarter mile away it was truly a rewarding experience.
Despite a clause in the Terms & Conditions for service fees, I was assured by the owner that this was intended for future products and not for the Ayre-Mesh Hub System.
Product Support is excellent and available quickly with some real congenial folks.
Forgot to purchase the cable necessary to mount the antenna so that delayed things a bit, and I have to check into lightening rods and protecting my computer from an errant lightening bolt strike, but guess it comes with the territory.
Another great feature is the ability to separate my home/office network from the public use easily by creating a separate name for the public network.
All in all a satisfying and cost effective solution to extending rural networks.

The AyrMesh Hub is the "building block" for the AyrMesh network. The first AyrMesh Hub (called the "Gateway") is connected to your existing high-speed internet connection (router) and distributes it via Wi-Fi up to half a mile away. Additional AyrMesh Hubs (called "Remotes") can then be deployed as to extend your network even further. All AyrMesh Hubs are automatically self-configuring using information from the AyrMesh Portal. If you are ordering the AyrMesh Hub as a Gateway (the first AyrMesh Hub, connected to your router) or you need to mount it further from your power outlet, make sure you order an Ethernet cable (or make your own Ethernet cable) long enough to reach from where it is mounted to the power supply. High Power USB-Yagi Plug and Play directional WiFi Antenna 802.11n 2200mW Review

Shipping was super fast and it was boxed and packed well. So far the reception is really good and a BIG improvement over the airport. Construction looks good as well. I only gave this 4 stars for one reason. The thing that got 4 stars was the software came on a mini-disc and since I am using a Macbook I had to find a desktop and find the file, email it to myself and continue with the install. They do have software on their site but it looks like the disk was a newer version. Once that was done it linked right up and gave me a definite signal improvement. I am in a remote area and I am going to do some more signal testing but so far I am happy with it.The tripod legs extend which is not really apparent when you look at them. They need to be extended all the way for stability. I got to test it last night at a site I have been to before with just a USB dongle. Before I could only receive a signal with about 10% strength. When I put this antenna on it got 98%! That was to a wifi hotspot about 1/3 of a mile away.Inside my office building my Macbook would only show about 75% signal to a router about 20ft away as it goes through several walls. With the TurboTenna I get 100% signal no matter which way it is pointed. All in all I think it is great so far and I can't wait to test it more. I think in time this will actually pay for itself by allowing me to connect to free hotspots instead of paying for wifi,

This is a good little USB network adaptor and works as advertised.
Background: I have a Dell laptop with an internal network card. I travel a lot and use it in hotels and hot spots quite a bit. The signal I was getting on the internal card with its two internal antenna's was weaker then I would like and usually doesn't get a strong enough signal to maintain 54 Mbps speed. I was usually down around 11 Mbps in a hotel room. Sometimes I have had to move to a different room, move to a balcony, or a certain point in the room to get a signal at all. In one hotel room I checked signal right after checking in and I could only get a usable signal near the door holding the computer up near the ceiling. I had to walk around the hotel to find a group of rooms that I thought would work and then coordinate with he front desk on availability and change rooms.
I researched many options, reading reviews, etc. Most other options were more expensive or problematic, including modifying my computer to install an external antenna. I looked at USB cards with the mail plug that plug into the computer without using an extension, pcmcia cards with external antenna's, directional antenna's, etc. Most of the reviews I read were from kids "War Driving" but still shed some light on how well this card works.
What I got: I went with the Alpha because of good reviews I read, and the fact that I can remote locate it using an extension giving more options then one mounted to the computer. The unit looks pretty cheap being plastic. Nothing special. It came with the two antennas. I ordered the two extension cables. One is passive and one is active (active is required for longer extensions).
Functionality/Results: It works well. So far I have not been in a Hotel where I didn't get an 88% or better connection (signal strength) with 85 or 90% link quality or better, and more importantly a link with 54 Mbps speed. I get many more signals too, but that is not what I was looking for in most cases. I have tried it in a dozen or so hotels and played with outside signals a bit. There are a lot of them out there.
The ability to move the antenna 10 to 25 feet away could be useful to get it on a balcony, outside a window, get around a concrete wall, etc. but I haven't had to do that yet with the Alpha. Once in the Bahamas, using the computers internal card, I had to get out on a balcony with a 40 mph wind coming off the ocean that would knock over the laptop if I didn't hold on to it, to get a clear shot to the hotel main building where the router was located. I had to weather the salt spray and either had to hold the computer screen to keep it from swaying so I could see it or hold my wine glass to keep it from tipping over. I needed three hands and it was a tough decision as to which two things to hold. That is when I decided to order this card. I read about folks on sail boats running the Alpha up the mast and getting a signal 4 or 10 miles off shore and putting the unit in a zip-loc bag to keep it out of the elements.
If I had modified my computer for an external antenna, or gotten a pcmcia card with external antenna, I could have run coaxial cable to a remote antenna to get the same position benefits, but the signal losses are large that way and signal cuts in half with every few feet of coax. With this adapter the antenna is run right into the transmitter/receiver and there is no loss, however you still have the ability to remote locate it up high in a room, outside a window, on a balcony, etc. without the loss. You don't get the signal loss from a USB cable, although you do run out of power if run too far. 25 feet with the two supplied cables is plenty for me.
Power: The high power is meaningless and probably a lie. I think they are claiming equivalent radiated power with a good antenna to some poor antenna standard like the antenna's printed on a pcmcia adapter card circuit board or something. Anyway it is not really a 1000mW adapter, but it does work well. The allowable power output is somewhat complicated but is based on radiated power (the combined effect of the transmitter and antenna). Anyway a balance of output power, receiver sensitivity, and selectivity is what is important and this one does a good job. It gets quite warm too only having passive cooling (vents).
Antenna's: Like many folks have reported, the big antenna doesn't seem to work any better for me then the little one. Sometimes it will get a slightly stronger signal and more signals with it, but the link quality (signal to noise ratio) is worse. The little antenna has worked fine in all cases so far and just as well as the big one on comparison.
Software: The software installed easily for me with Windows XP and I have had no problems. The software is between OK to fairly nice. I can still enable my internal card and use it when the signal is strong and I don't want to carry the Alpha. I disable it when using the Alpha.
Works great. Hope it last a long time.
If you are looking for solutions for your home (or work) because of problems with range on your Wifi you might also try one of the homemade paper directional parabolic antenna's that you print off from the internet. They really work and also increase security if positioned properly by directing coverage to within your house and decreasing coverage outside. They work will with this unit too. Requires a router with external antenna(s). You can also put one on the antenna of the Alpha and beam signals between the router and the Alpha. Quite effective. You print out a template from the internet, cutout a couple pieces of paper, cover one with foil or aluminum tape, stick the parabolic template together to the flat sheet to form the shape, and position the unit on the antenna of your router. Just do a search on "DIY windsurfer parabolic WIFI antenna" as Amazon doesn't' allow links. Also watch one of the Vid's on it.

AirLink101 AWLL6075 Wireless N Mini USB Adapter Review

AirLink101 AWLL6075 Wireless N Mini USB Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For those of you using Windows or Mac OS X, I have no idea how this thing works. I am writing this for those who may be interested in using it on Linux.
I got this because the price couldn't be beat for the feature set. While USB Wi-Fi adapters tend to be much cheaper than their PCMCIA counterparts, this one has an especially good feature set for the price I paid. And it is not nearly so massive as the others I have seen.
I ordered this based on reviews of a different version of the AirLink101. The numbers following ("AWLL6075") are important in determining compatibility. Turns out the model AWLL3026 works out of the box with modern Linux distributions. However, no driver has been written to support the AWLL6075.
I tried using the supplied drivers with ndis wrapper. I could talk to the device, and it reported finding hotspots, but it never connected. Perhaps others may have more luck with this approach, but I wanted to let other Linux users who were considering this option that this is not yet a simple plug-n-play solution as I had anticipated due to my inadequate research.
I will write again if support gets added to update my experience.

TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N Gigabit Router Review

TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND Ultimate Wireless N Gigabit Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this to replace belkin wireless N+ router (you can see my review for the belkin N+). The signal from may laptops to belkin would vary between 1Mbps - 48Mbps, and often losing the signal all together. This is with using built in wireless G. I added belkin wireless N adapter and signal would then range from 11Mbps - 120Mbps, but far fewer drops. I replaced with this TP-Link TL-WR1043 and after 1 week, I get no wireless drop outs at all. My laptop with built in wireless G consistently reports 54Mbps and my laptop with the belkin N adapter generally reports 120Mbps (sometimes dropping to 60Mbps, sometimes as high as 150Mbps).
I should note that the TP-Link router is in the same exact location where my old belkin was, and my laptops are in the same exact location. So I have not varied distance nor obstacles between router & laptops. My laptops are ~75 feet from router in separate building, nearest neighbor ~.75 miles, so no change in interference from neighbors.
Now if only I could figure out how to get 300Mbps. I have tried from several other locations, but best I ever get is 150Mbps. But as this greatly exceeds my connection to ISP, it is not really a big issue. Oddly enough, if I move closer to the router, I get slower connection (~30Mbps) with N adapter but still get 54Mbps with build-in wireless G adapter.

The Linksys WRT51AB does not deliver at all. Using the 802.11A radio, we've experienced nothing but lockups. The router locks up which then locks up the computers attached to the point the keyboard and mouse do not respond. With the cards set for ad-hoc and the router unplugged, the network runs fine. Three months of constant contact with Tech Support has netted us repeated canned responses that do not resolve the issue. Please, do not buy this product. I am a certified network engineer with 12 years experience. I tried more possible solutions than Linksys script monkeys can offer.

The Linksys A+B dual-band wireless broadband router is like four devices in one box. The router function lets you securely share one high-speed Internet connection among your entire network, while the four-port, full-duplex 10/100 Mbps switch jump-starts your wired Ethernet network. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need.
The router also contains two wireless access points, which let you connect with wireless networked PCs using either the popular 2.4 GHz 802.11b standard at 11 Mbps, or the almost five-times-faster 5 GHz 802.11a standard. Since both standards are built in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b equipment today, and migrate to the 802.11a standard as your needs grow.
In addition to up to 152-bit encryption of wireless transmissions, the A+B dual-band wireless broadband router supports the industrial-strength wireless security of 802.1x authentication and authorization. The router also serves as a DHCP server, has NAT technology to protect against Internet intruders, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. Configuration is a snap with the Web browser-based configuration utility.
With the Linksys A+B dual-band wireless broadband router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multiplayer games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need.

This product works flawlessly straight out of the box. The installation was a snap. It works best with the small usb extension provided. I use it with an old Dell laptop to connect it to my new D-Link615 router. It connects my network between two buidings separated by a small area of tropical rain forest, a distance of more than three hundred feet, and through three concrete walls.I like the AES encryption for the enhanced security. This has got to be the best product for the price. I was really impressed with the performance..

AmbiCom WL300N-AR Wireless 802.11b/g/n 300 Mbps Cable/DSL Router Review

AmbiCom WL300N-AR Wireless 802.11b/g/n 300 Mbps Cable/DSL Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First problem was my mistake. I was looking for a DSL modem/router combo and did not read the description well enough. However, I was able to easilly set it up as an access point and connect it to my current DSL Modem/Router combo. I turned off the wireless features from the old router and everything works fine for me in that regard.
300 Mbps? Not so sure about that. All of my current 802.11n wireless cards have the most recent firmware and drivers and the best I can get is 150 Mbps about a foot away from the router. Ten feet away, it drops off to about 135 Mbps and in the worst case scenario, its still better than my wireless G that I used to use. However, I bought this for the ability to stream multimedia throughout my house and my 802.11n equipped media extender is still connecting at less than desireable speeds.
Another issue that I had (and it was not mentioned in the documentation for the router OR the documentation for two of my HP laptops) is that YOU NEED to change your wireless security settings to WPA2. I was using WPA and could only connect at a max 54 Mbps. Apparently it is a problem with some routers and wireless cards that use the Ateros chipset. Neither HP, nor ambicom were able to resolve the issue and HP even sent a new WiFi card for my laptop thinking that would fix the problem. A bit of googling informed me about the slower speed issues and changing to WPA2 fixed the problem. HP support is now aware of the issue and has even thanked me for informing them of how I resolved the issue.
Is it better than what I had before? Yes. Is it as good as I expected? No, not yet. Hopefully a firmware update will resolve some of the speed issues and I'll be able to get the full 300Mbps (Yes, I have it set up to run "n" only and have no g devices on my network.)

Belkin Wireless N+ 802.11n Router (Black)
Average Reviews:

The Belkin wireless N+ router is the third wireless router I have purchased over the last five years. I have a three story house and the router is located on the first floor. The earlier routers did not cover the entire house and I had to use a wireless repeater. More importantly, these earlier routers were always having to be reset, sometimes on a daily basis. This new Belkin router has taken care of both problems. It gives a substantially stronger signal and I do not need the repeater any longer. More importantly, is has been absolutely reliable. Well, like any product, there are those who love it and those who hate it. Our family likes this wireless G adapter. My husband bought it, and he doesn't know much at all about computers. He plugged it in and Voila! He had internet upstairs and the wireless router is downstairs. He has used it for about 9 months now with no problems and we are buying one for our son's laptop becuase the internal in his just went bye-bye. Based on our experiences with this item, I recommend this as a low cost way to get wireless on your desktop or laptop.

Cisco-Linksys WMP54GX Wireless G PCI Adapter with SRX Review

Cisco-Linksys WMP54GX Wireless G PCI Adapter with SRX
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'd heard about this booster from some friends, and thought it would be just the ticket to give my home wireless network some punch. Man, was I surprised when I installed this board.
When I fired this thing up, I picked up good strong signals from 3 other sources in my neighborhood, and at speeds of 11Mbps on all of them. WOW! And my home network is blazing fast now, no more drop outs or slow downloads. This adapter does everything it claims.
Maybe the best thing about this booster, and I am no fan of Linksys, is the ease of installation. Just remember to install the drivers first, then plug in the card and the 3 itsy bitsy mini-connectors for the antenna and voo-ah-lah...you're in bidness. If there is a real negative it is the antenna cable...at 3 meters it doesnt allow you a lot of freedom about where you put the thing. 5 handcuffs

The Linksys Wireless-N PCI Adapter installs in most desktop and tower PCs, and lets you put your computer almost anywhere in the building without the cost and hassle of running network cables. Now you dont have to drill holes in your walls and climb through the attic or cellar to get connected to the network. The Wireless-N PCI Adapter uses the very latest wireless networking technology, Wireless-N (draft 802.11n). By overlaying the signals of multiple radios, Wireless-Ns Multiple In, Multiple Out (MIMO) technology multiplies the effective data rate. Unlike ordinary wireless networking technologies that are confused by signal reflections, MIMO actually uses these reflections to increase the range and reduce dead spots in the wireless coverage area.

D-Link DIR-628 RangeBooster N Dual Band Router Review

D-Link DIR-628 RangeBooster N Dual Band Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am in the business of IT and telecom.
I have used some other high end WiFi AP and routers in my days.
This DLink 628, even though just a consumer unit, has blurred the line between professional and consumer use wifi routers.
The setup is a breeze. I was up and running (using Mac), without the set up CD, in less than 3 min.
First on speed, it is fast. Side by side testing with the Dlink DIR655, they are both the same speed with all of the config being the same.
The QoS feature is wonderful, you can prioritize by IP to many tiers. So now when my kids are playing games with voice and video, my html browsing can have priority over them. (Since in routing, the voice and video gets priority in getting transferred.)
All in all, this is a wonderful unit for the price (only $75 now on Amazon).
I would buy this one over the DIR 655 since I really don't see any speed improvement on the 655 but almost twice the price.
I give it 5 stars and highly recommend it as a good buy.

Dual Panda Wifi (b/g/n) 150Mbps Wireless-N 2.4GHz USB Adapters (One in White & One in Black) - Windows 7, Mac OS X and Fedora Linux Compatible Review

Dual Panda Wifi (b/g/n) 150Mbps Wireless-N 2.4GHz USB Adapters (One in White and One in Black) - Windows 7, Mac OS X and Fedora Linux Compatible

I purchased this product solely because of its compatibility with Mac OS X, as my internal wireless card is "unpredictable" at best. However, I couldn't figure out which driver to use to install the Panda USB because the Mini CD that ships with the package is not readable by the internal CD/DVD drive found in my MacBookPro -- the drive doesn't have a retractable tray to which the mini disk can be coupled. Thus began my aggravations with the purchase of this adapter. The website for this product at [...] has the drivers for Mac, Linux, and Windows but no instructions to follow for installation. That's helpful. I was glad to download the driver over a 15k link if I could only tell what driver number applies to my wireless device. There is not a mention of the manufacturers model number anywhere on the adapter, on the packaging, or in the brief brochure that is included in the retail box. Once I am able to figure out that this card is RT3070 and download the software, the device remains unusable. The Ralink wireless manager software reports that the card is connected to my network, yet my ISR/access point does not show an association, and consequently an IP address isn't assigned to the device. However, there is no convincing the proprietary wi-fi manager that the adapter isn't actually associated. Lovely. Thinking that I may be able to use it on the Linux OS that dual boots on my laptop, I load up Fedora 11 and download the Linux driver from the RaLink website. Too bad that I cannot figure out how to get the installation going now that I have the driver. I don't know if it is not compatible with my distro or what. And where are the customers supposed to get the supposed one year technical support? The link from the manufacturers website immediately prompts the end user for username and password credentials without providing a link for one to use to create an account. I give up -- its a loss and a total waste of money. Had I known about the shoddy support and lack of documentation I would not have taken a chance on this product, let alone its inability to function in the Mac OS X environment. Caveat Emptor.

I purchased this card along with the Belkin Wireless N Router. The installation and setup were easy, and the documentation is crystal clear. The card and router are operating very well. I am getting speeds of 72 Mbps at close range, and 55 Mbps at the other end of the house. The software that comes with the card and router makes it easy to understand and monitor your network. Highly recommended.

We kinda bought this figuring it was "snake oil". Well, we were wrong...dead wrong! We plugged this into the Vista laptop, Vista found it and we were using it in less than 1 minute, and to our surprise it picked up our neighbor's router 1000 ft down the road and on the other side of his house! We used to get his signal intermittently on the laptop, but with this plugged in with the hi-gain antenna, we get 4 out of 5 bars! This is through tall, thick trees and a motor home!
When the first reviewer (I read)says it got her father in law's signal 1000 feet or yards down the road, she isn't lying!!!
I just put it on my Windows 7 desktop and it works just the same. I just plugged it in, and windows found it, installed drivers and it's fine.
I ALWAYS suggest going online for the latest drivers for any computer hardware, but this one seems to work fine off of Windows Vista and 7's proprietary drivers.
