Belkin Share N300 Wireless N Router Review

Belkin Share N300 Wireless N Router

I bought this on Black Friday 2010 for $29.99. The price was great and the router came with one USB port. I use a USB hub to connect two devices to the router: a laser printer (Brother DCP-1000) and an external hard drive (Western Digital 1 TB). I tested both devices by printing a one-page document while watching a 700 MB .avi file. They both worked fine.
Unfortunately, I do not own any wireless devices that use 802.11n standard. I thought my laptops and Droid X would benefit from a wireless router that broadcasts on b/g/n, but the performance and range were no better than when I was on my wireless G router (Netgear WGR614).

Belkin Wireless N+ 802.11n Router (Black) Review

Belkin Wireless N+ 802.11n Router (Black)
Average Reviews:

The Belkin wireless N+ router is the third wireless router I have purchased over the last five years. I have a three story house and the router is located on the first floor. The earlier routers did not cover the entire house and I had to use a wireless repeater. More importantly, these earlier routers were always having to be reset, sometimes on a daily basis. This new Belkin router has taken care of both problems. It gives a substantially stronger signal and I do not need the repeater any longer. More importantly, is has been absolutely reliable. I have not had any problems since plugging it in a month ago. Set up was a breeze. I am one totally-happy camper!

Belkin F5D8010 Wireless Pre-N 802.11x Pre-N Notebook PC Card Adapter Review

Belkin F5D8010 Wireless Pre-N 802.11x Pre-N Notebook PC Card Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a Senior Network Engineer and I have been doing various things in designing, building, and fixing all kinds of networking equipment for about 13 years now. I have installed from scratch several enterprise (or very large office) class wireless networks. I use the Belkin Pre-N wireless router and laptop cards at home for a few reasons:

First to get the best benefit out of the Belkin Pre-N card you'll want to use it in conjunction with the Belkin Pre-N router. Then you'll want to upgrade the Pre-N router firmware (or software) to the latest version available on the Belkin web site.
1) The Speed - 108 Mbps (Mega Bits Per Second) which is faster than the standard 100Mbps Ethernet card in most PC's. However you will never really see this full speed due to the error correcting, radio interference, and overhead in the wireless protocol, but the Belkin Pre-N laptop card in conjunction with the Belkin Pre-N router will be at least 2 times faster than your standard 802.11G wireless cards (including the built in wireless cards in most laptops today). One thing to note you will only see the greater speed if you use the Belkin Pre-N card along with the Belkin Pre-N router. If you don't you'll only get the standard 802.11G speed (54 Mbps). The Pre-N designates a few things they did to double the standard 802.11G speed and it actually means the precursor to the 802.11N standard that was just recently ratified by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.) Incidentally Belkin now has the N1 wireless line which is compliant with the new 801.11N standard and can get theoretical speeds up to 300 Mbps (almost twice the Pre-N speed).
You can check your speed to the internet at www.speakeasy.net/speedtest. You should check your speed before installing your card (to get a bench mark of your internet speed) and afterwards to make sure it's close to the same or hopefully much better. If you find your speed slows down after installing the Pre-N card, you would want to look at what other wireless networks are operating near you. NetStumbler is a great free program [...] that will not only tell you what wireless networks are operating near you but it will tell you the all important channel they operate on. Ideally you want your wireless network channel to be 4 channels away (if possible) from any other wireless network operating near you. So if you see a wireless network near you (not yours) that is operating on channel 1, then you want to set your wireless network channel to 5 or higher. This of course gets really interesting if you have several wireless networks because 802.11G (Pre-N being an extension of that) only has channels 1 - 11 to use. So you just have to do your best to have your channel as far away as you can from all other wireless channels. Most people don't know about all of this and leave their channel on the default (channel 1) so you might be able to switch to the higher channels without many being there. The other thing that can slow your wireless network (or even cause you to get disconnected) is 2.4 GHz cordless phones. 802.11G (including Pre-N) and the slower older 802.11B standard (which operates at 11 Mbps) use the same 2.4 GHz band. I actually had to get rid of a couple of my 2.4 GHz cordless phones and buy some 900 MHz cordless phones (this was the standard before the 2.4 GHz cordless phones). The 2.4 GHz cordless phones are supposed to check for clear channels but many just go down the list from 1 to 2 to channel 3, etc because it's easier to develop the phones to do that. So when I took a phone call it would kick me off of the wireless network sometimes when my 2.4 GHz cordless phone hit the same channel as my wireless network.2) Range - The Belkin Pre-N card used in conjunction with the Belkin Pre-N router allows you to be much farther away from the Belkin router without loosing any speed or loosing your connection. Belkin boasts 8 times farther coverage than the standard 802.11G cards (like the one built into your laptop). And from what I've seen this is true. Now it may not sound like you need to be so far away from your router but the thing is, with standard 802.11G, as you get even 50 - 100 feet away from the wireless router (and especially as you add walls between your PC and wireless router) you may start to go down in your speed. The 802.11G wireless cards will start at 54Mbps and go down from there even all the way to 1 Mbps (very slow). I had this problem because I have a 2 story home with basement and my internet wiring is in the basement and therefore my Belkin Pre-N router is in the basement as well. I would then be working all the way on the second story (some 150 feet away) with several walls between my PC and wireless router and watch my wireless speed go down to 11 Mbps with the built in wireless card in my ThinkPad T43. With the Pre-N card in my ThinkPad, I maintain 108 Mbps everywhere I've gone, even outside in the yard. So the range benefit isn't just so you can go a block from your home and get wireless coverage but so that you can maintain a good wireless connection and good speed over it.3) Security - Belkin Pre-N supports WPA-TKIP, WPA-AES, WEP, and no encryption (clear). It's obviously unwise to have no encryption or clear because anybody nearby can see everything you send over the wireless network be it traffic to other computers, or things you send or receive from the internet (like your emails and website passwords). WEP is not much better and can be broken into when someone just sits in your neighborhood and sniffs less than 1 million of your network packets (usually less than 1 hour). Now having a stranger getting on your wireless network may not sound so bad but really it's like someone plugging in a network cable from their PC directly to yours only that you have no idea they did it and no idea who they are. So in addition to browsing the internet for free on your wireless network they can also try to connect to your PC, steal files from your PC, plant bad programs onto your PC, or watch the traffic you send to the internet from your PC and watch things like the login and password to your bank, etrade, etc go by. Give that some thought before you say you don't care if people connect to your wireless network. Therefore I strongly recommend you use the WPA encryption type and preferably set the Pre-N router to accept only WPA-AES encryption (the hardest to break of all of them). Once you set the Belkin Pre-N router to this, it will only accept connections of this type. You will have to come up with a long key (or key word) but this is one of the reasons why WPA-AES very secure. Along with that I would set it to 802.11G only so that no 802.11B clients (operating at 11Mbps) can connect. Running both bands causes more interference and again slows down your wireless network. I would also recommend you uncheck the box in the Pre-N router configuration that says "Broadcast SSID". By doing this you will NOT broadcast the name of your wireless network and people will not even see it when they browse for wireless networks near them. This is yet another hurdle to someone getting on your wireless network along with the WPA-AES encryption. You will know the name of your wireless network (and you should change this to something only you know as well). When you try to connect, you'll have to manually setup a wireless network in Windows and put the name in manually (not hard at all). Keep in mind only Windows XP supports WPA so if you have any other version of Windows (like Windows 2000) you would have to get special software for it to connect to a wireless WPA network. It's probably worth an upgrade anyway because Windows XP Professional runs quite a bit better than Windows 2000 or the other older versions of Windows. Again you really want to run WPA encryption. Also you'll want to set a good password on your Belkin Pre-N router so people can't connect to it and change all of this secure stuff you've set.
Conclusion: The install of the Belkin Pre-N wireless card works well and is fairly easy. The drivers they have for the card are very good also. The Belkin Pre-N router configuration is all done through a web browser and it works well too (as long as you upgrade the firmware on it to the latest on the Belkin Web site). So all and all I don't really have anything bad to say about the Belkin Pre-N products. They work very well, do what they say they can, and are pretty fast, and trouble free. They are priced well too now especially since the N1 products have come out. So as long as you're O.K with the 108 Mbps speed you should be very happy with it. But if you absolutely want the 300Mbps, then check out the more expensive N1 products that Belkin now has. This would only really matter when you are sending traffic PC to PC in your home and would not make much difference when going to the internet for anything. Remember most home internet connects are 8 Mbps or less anyway and your Pre-N card is at 108 Mbps. So the N1 products may not be worth the extra money unless you do a lot of PC to PC copying or something. But the benefits of Pre-N are definitely worth it if only for the reason that the greater range allows you to stay at full speed even if you're farther away from your wireless router.

Belkin Wireless N 4-Port Router Review

Belkin Wireless N 4-Port Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To begin, I purchased this router less than a few weeks before Christmas. This is actually my first wireless router (I had always used wired routers before), but I was able to plug it in, and connect perfectly fine. In less than 30 minutes, I was able to set it up, and my wired connections worked perfectly fine. Only problem was that the wireless didn't work at all.
I've struggled with the wireless for a week after I got this router. The problem was that upon first setting up the router, it would work fine, but as soon as you implement new settings (port forwarding or wireless security, for example), it would suddenly stop working. I found that hard resetting was the only way to get the wireless to work, but of course, leaving it as thus was unacceptable because I wanted to at least set up wireless security to prevent outside access. Unfortunately, after a few hours of struggling with this, it resulted in the wireless not working at all. Hard resetting, powercycling, reinstalling the firmware; nothing worked.
As a computer hobbyist, I usually pride myself on being able to fix things like this myself, but even I wasn't able to do anything. Needless to say, I had to call tech support. I may as well say here that tech support is absolutely worthless. I was routed to, where else, India, and got on with a tech support representative. I was led through the basic steps (and had to ask the rep. to repeat multiple times because I couldn't understand) and, at the end, the wireless still wouldn't work. The rep kept insisting that wireless isn't working for me simply because I either didn't have 'the drivers' or the 'proper wireless adapter'. Finally, I just had enough, and I was on my own getting the wireless to work again.
Just as I was having serious thoughts about making a return, however, I somehow managed to get the wireless to work. I must have had help from God because, at that point, it had seemed hopeless. Nonetheless, I did manage to get it working fine. I could port forward, set up wireless security, and basically do anything just fine. Unfortunately, it's not completely problems free. Like others, I have and am experiencing random connection drops (it seems as if the router randomly resets), but fortunately, it did not stop the wireless from working anymore. Furthermore, the Belkin Wireless N resets extremely quickly, so it's not as big of a deal as the previous problem to me.
Now that I am able to get the router working fine, let me review the actual router itself. Here is how the Belkin Wireless N ranks in the important areas of range, speed, security, stability, and features.
1) Range - I, like many others, purchased the Belkin Wireless N for the purpose of using the wireless feature. As such, one of the most important features to me is the range. After all, I didn't purchase a wireless router just to be confined to a single room because the range wouldn't extent past the walls. So then, how does the router rank in range? I would say it is fairly good.
I live in a three story house and the router is set up on the third floor. On the third floor and the second floor, the connection power is fully strong. However, on the first floor, the range just drops tremendously. On the first floor at the best location, the number of connection bars is usually one or two, which is a big drop. I suspect that there may be electronic interference.
For what it's worth, the range does seem to be pretty excellent, which is a commendable point on the Belkin Wireless N's part.
2) Speed - Of course, what worth is the range if there is no speed? I have tested the speed using the wired connections and the wireless connections and this is another commendable part of the router. The speed is just as fast wireless as it is with wired connections and both compares favorably with my previous router (all three matches the speed advertised by my ISP).
Truthfully, I had expected some loss of speed when using wireless, so this was impressive. It should be noted, however, that I was in the optimal position for speed testing (i.e. I was sitting right next to the router), so more likely than not, there would not some loss of speed if I had performed the test, say, on another floor in my house.
Regardless, the speed factor is definitely a category the router does well in.
3) Security - The Belkin Wireless N offers ample security to protect against outside invaders jumping on your network. From the simple WEP to the much more powerful WPA2 (I chose that one, of course), it really is nice security. Furthermore, if you chose one of the more simple security, the router actually offers an extra step of further encrypting the password for you.
Personally, I did not like the second encryption, but it is a nice thought nonetheless. I rank the router well in the category of security.
4) Stability - Well, as noted by the first four paragraphs of this review, stability is the one category the Belkin Wireless N fails miserably in (that and tech support anyway). Aside from the trouble of setting up the wireless to work correctly, however, there is also the problem of random dropped connections, which is fortunately mitigated by the router's ability to reset quickly, but it is still a problem nonetheless.
Aside from these problems, however, which can be solved through a router update (if Belkin ever decides to make another update, that is), the router really does not lose much else in the area of stability.
5) Features - Another category in which the Belkin router does well. The router comes with ample features which can all be found on the router's homepage. All the basic features and many more advanced features are here for the users' desire.
Personally, I have no use for many of the extra features (aside from port forwarding), so it's not a big deal for me, but the gesture is still appreciated nonetheless.Alright then, so out of five categories, the Belkin Wireless N does smashingly in four of them. One would think this speaks favorably of them, but lets look at the realistic side: For the vast majority of consumers, only three of those categories truly matters. Those three categories are the range, speed, and stability. The Belkin router does well in two of them, but it fails in the last one spectacularly.
Furthermore, unfortunately for Belkin, many other routers offers excellent speed and range too, so doing well in just those two categories is not necessarily enough to make it pass with flying colors. It really was crucial that Belkin made its router stable and it is unfortunate that it was unable to do this well enough.
Overall, what would be my recommendation for the Belkin Wireless N? My recommendation is this: If you're knowledgeable about computers and is willing to work at getting a slick and powerful router to work, then the Belkin Wireless N is not completely bad. However, if you're just looking for a simple wireless solution, I would recommend a better router.

The Belkin N Wireless Router uses the Wireless N protocol to provide an ultra-fast and reliable wireless network for your apartment or office. Offering outstanding performance, this router can handle the most demanding tasks, letting you stream HD video at the same time your kids are playing online games and sharing photos with their friends.
Smart Design with Wired and Wireless Connections The Wireless N Router has a striking, vertical enclosure that is both handsome and space efficient. The two built-in external antennas provide a wireless range of up to 1,200 feet and easily covers an apartment or small office. Six LEDs for Security, Wireless, Wired, Router, Modem, and Internet let you know the status of your network at a glance, making it easy to troubleshoot any problems.
Wireless N uses the latest 802.11n Draft 2.0 technology, offering better range and throughput than 802.11g and 802.11b networks. By using smart MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output) antenna technology, the range of a Wireless N network is extended and can blanket a large home.
With wireless speeds of up to 300Mbps, you won't be waiting for videos to buffer or music to download because your children are playing online games. Wireless N provides more than enough bandwidth to make crystal-clear Internet phone calls, transfer a large amount of photos, and stream movies to your computer without any lag or hiccups.
You can also share networked peripherals such as a Wi-Fi printer, hard drives, and DVDs. If you have some computers that use the older wireless standards, they'll still work because the Wireless N router is backwards compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b devices (though they won't connect at the same blistering speed). For maximum speed and range, Belkin's N Wireless USB Adapter, Notebook Card, and ExpressCard adapter are recommended.
In addition to Wireless N, the router also has four 10/100 Ethernet ports at the back, giving you the option to plug in for a steady and secure, fast connection running at up to 100Mbps.
Thanks to the strong built-in security, including support for WPA, WPA2, Wi-Fi Protected Setup, and 64-and 128-bit WEP encryption, you will be protected from hackers and intruders trying to gain access to your sensitive files. Setting up security is simple, too: just push the Wi-Fi Protected Setup button located on the front of the router. The router also supports VPN for making secure connections between home and office.
Easy to Set Up Belkin designed the Wireless N Router to be as simple to use as possible. Simply connect your wireless router to your cable or DSL modem, plug the router in, and connect your computer to the router. That's it. To help monitor your network performance and usage, the router includes Personal Network Assistant software, which runs on Windows XP/Vista and Mac OS X 10.4/10.5.
The Belkin N Wireless router is backed by a 1-year warranty and includes free 24/7 technical support.

The first thing to know about the Belkin N300 wireless router is it takes little more than plugging it in to have it up and running (although the software is needed to change the default password). It comes with a network cable to connect to your cable modem and four conventional LAN ports for legacy devices using non-wireless connections. The wireless connection works out of the box and the performance is very good. I was able to connect a laptop, Kindle, and Nintendo DSi without issue. For those without much of a computer background, it makes an excellent choice given its ease of use.

Wow, I thought I was having problems with my Cisco-Linksys. This Belkin was awful. Speeds off the router were horrific -- consistently 0.33mbps. (Plugged directly into the modem by ethernet I was getting 7mbps). The range of this router is not particularly good either and the supplied software is infuriating. When I changed the name of the network through the router manager, it didn't seem to register with all the software. The router understood and was properly renamed, but the manager didn't figure it out and it kept notifying me that the network had changed names and it was connecting me to the new one (though it was already connected...). Also, it took three tries to update the router's firmware and when it was finally installed the router manager software on my computer was no longer in sync with the router. The Belkin router manager would continually bug me that I was not connected to the internet and yet, I was. Trash it.

This router stops working every couple of days. Internet access is lost and even the router's web interface at 192.168.2.1 cannot be reached when it stops working. Cycling power gets it working again, for a couple more days. That is totally unacceptable to me. Belkin customer support was not helpful on this issue. There are no firmware updates for this router at the time of this writing.
I have two of these routers and both behave the same way.
I am very disapointed with this Belkin product and it will make me think twice before I buy any other Belkin product.

This card has been flawlessley for four months now. Preformance is very pleasing. A little stronger signal strength than most usb dongles that I've used. Plugged in the card, ran the installation software, and was up and running in about five minutes on my XP laptop. Around the house, I am able to get good signal strength
a few rooms away from the router. While out and about, I am able to achieve good connections from some distance. Haven't had any problems connecting to open networks, or on a secure network when using a password. This was not my experience with other devices.
Don't think you can go wrong with this device.

Our router bit the dust and my son had taken to connecting to the neighbor's access point, while I chose to tether to my mobile phone. Meanwhile, it was only a matter of time before other family members found dissatisfaction in either of these contingencies. What is a skinflint like me to do?
I wanted, well, everything...
* 802.11 b/g/n
* at least 4 gigabit Ethernet ports
* dual-band
* ability to connect an external drive as a simple NAS
* a 2-yr warranty would be nice
Costco had these on sale for $89.99. I couldn't say 'no'.
Setup was a breeze. The Belkin Router Monitor app sits in the System Tray and makes configuration easy. Most configuration parameters have help files that can be called up by clicking on the parameter's title and help files are quite good.
Performance is very good. Gigabit Ethernet ports are fast (as they should be). Wireless is predictable (so far) and reaches 150-ft (54Mb). Configuring remote devices is easy.
Only thing is, when I connected my 1TB WD MyBook drive, the router would not recognize it. I finally called tech support and learned that the router ONLY supports SELF-POWERED portable USB drives or thumb drives. I tested this with a 320GB Seagate FreeAgent Go drive, which I had on hand, and the router detected it instantly and network access was very quick. I'm glad I didn't buy an externally powered drive.

I'm using two of these cards, one in a Windows 98 SE system and one in a Windows XP system, to top it off they all go through an Apple Airport Base station and link with my Apple iBook. Using WEP, too, with the hex key produced by the Base station. Working fine!

Belkin F5D9230-4 Wireless-G Plus MIMO Router Review

Belkin F5D9230-4 Wireless-G Plus MIMO Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The original version of this router was version 1000, based on the same platform as Belkin's F5D8230-4 Pre-N and the Linksys WRT54GX routers using Airgo's v1 technology and a Broadcom engine. It got an excellent review from Tom's Networking guide.
Then Belkin put a whole new circuit bard inside the same case and called it Version 2000. It used Airgo's v2 technology and a Realtek engine, and got roundly criticized on the equipment forums for being an inferior product.
The latest version is 3000, which isn't even based on Airgo technology any more. Now Belkin is using Ralink technology, and it's essentially the same router as the Airlink AR-525W, SparkLAN WRTR-300 or Compusa's store brand MIMO router, any of which can be found in stores for about 25 bucks. The version 3000 technology bears no resemblance to the Airgo version that got such a good review at Tom's. In fact, the router with the Ralink chipset (the Airlink) came in dead last and was the only one to receive a rating of "not recommended" in Tom's roundup.
Of course there's no way to tell in advance which version you'll get, but it's a pretty good bet you'll get the latest one. The only way to tell is to look at the sticker on the bottom of the box.
This practice of changing the internal electronics without changing the model number is a really annoying practice. It's hard enough to do all your research and decide which model to buy, so then to end up with something entirely different from what you thought you were getting is just maddening. Your best bet is to just stay away from this one.

August 11: I bought this router from Walmart and proved a bad buy. Although installation is easy, but the router drops signal 5-6 times per day. Whenever It drops signal, I have to unplug it, wait for 10-15 seconds, then plug it again with power supply. Not funny!November, 02, 2010: Belkin customer service has spent around 30-45 minutes to upgrade firmware for this router. Their latest firmware has actually solved the frequent signal dropping problems and for the last couple of weeks I have not been experiencing any signal drop. I also get 150 mbps data transfer speed for laptop and 135 mbps for desktop. It also covers entirely my one bedroom apartment( 480 sq. feet). Right now, I am satisfied with this product and getting good value for my money.
I sincerely suggest others to buy it. I give this product 4 star.

Belkin Surf N300 Wireless N Router Review

Belkin Surf N300 Wireless N Router
Average Reviews:

A lot of people have complained about the Belkin Surf F7D230 - the older version of this router sold in a blue/white box. I got the revised version F7D6301, which seems to work just fine for me.
I am replacing my good-ole Linksys WRT54G v1.0 with the Belkin Surf N300 F7D6301. Here are my comments:
* I bought it for $29 at Walmart on Black Friday, otherwise it sells for about $45.
* I did not use the Setup CD that would install a 95MB setup/monitoring program.
* If you have Windows 7, the setup is easy enough, just connect the power cable, hook up the router to the modem and you are set. The only other thing you need to do is to enter the preset password located on a small card on the side of the router. You can later access the router settings by entering http://192.168.2.1/ in your browser and set up a more convenient WPA/WPA2 under "Security" located in the left hand side navigation area.
* If you are not tech savvy, run the setup CD, it pretty much does it all for you.
I then ran a network test on speedtest.net and Belkin Surf outperformed my old router in download speeds Linksys 12 Mbps vs. Belkin Surf 20 Mbps. Upload speeds were exactly the same 1.85 Mbps. Please note that speeds will vary due to your provider and what type of plan you have.
Then I tested the range performance. I walked outside with my laptop, about 150 feet and after connecting to one and the other, I noticed that the signal strength was "fair" for my old router and "good" for the Belkin. Also, the speeds have dropped significantly for both routers, but the Belkin still outperformed the old Linksys; 2-4 Mbps for the Linksys vs. 6-8 Mbps for the Belkin.
Pros:
+ Over all, the router is a great choice for the $price$.
+ No dropped connection issues, signal strength is good all over the house.
+ I can surf the web even 150 ft. away from the router.
+ The internet speed is improved.
Cons:
- Not that it matters, but the router feels like it is made out of cheap plastic. For those who like good looking/feeling things, this is definitely not the best choice. However, if you don't care about visual appeal, tuck this thing away from the view and let it do it's job.
The rest is up to you...

Belkin Wireless 150N Router (F6D4230-4) Review

Belkin Wireless 150N Router (F6D4230-4)

I needed to replace my d-link wireless router after 7 years of admirable service and I noticed this Belkin router was on the cheap. Cheap doesn't necessarily mean good in this case though. This Belkin router drops the Internet connection every 10-20 minutes even though the cable modem is always working properly. After 4 support calls with Belkin and 2 with my cable provider, I rebooted the modem/router (multiple times), reinstalled the firmware, disabled all security, cloned MAC addresses, performed an exorcism (j/k) and I still couldn't resolve the problem. Both Belkin and my cable provider mentioned there's nothing else we could do, so time to shop for another router...

This router was so easy to install, it was scary! After years of living in "Linksys hell" with their "b" router, version 2, I decided to take a chance on a new, highly-rated router. Out of the box, I had the Belkin installed and working immediately in 10 minutes or less!! I'm just an average user, but I highly recommend this router to anyone who is thinking of switching to wireless networking in their home. Well worth the money to upgrade.
