(More customer reviews)Of all the gadgets purchased in 2010, and I bought a bunch, the Netgear 3DHD WNHDB3004 is the biggest disappointment of the year. Netgear says loud and clear, our product will stream Blu-Rays. Well, I suppose it does but not more than a few minutes without getting dropouts.
I ran tests using a Netgear NeoTV 550. The NeoTV has a network test mode that shows streaming performance. To stream Blu-Ray, you need a constant 56Mbps or faster speed. The NeoTV would report that the 3DHD streams 62Mbps most of the time but occasionally showed dips below 56Mbps, sometimes as low as 38Mbps. That's literally a showstopper when streaming Blu-Ray. It turns a movie into a slideshow. The failed NeoTV network test results are completely consistent with the failed playing of Blu-Rays. The product is a big fail for its principle claim of streaming Blu-Rays.
I ran many other tests. Wired performance from my server worked fine. I flipped back and forth between wired and wireless. Clearly only wireless had an issue. I also tried moving the two devices around. I changed the orientation and distance between them. At no time did network speeds consistently stay at or above 56Mbps. I even fiddled with router settings hoping that disabling encryption or other changes would help. Nothing did. In the process of testing, I did discover a curious issue. If the two units are within inches of each other, communications fails. They have to be not-too-close and not-too-far.
Hard to believe that in 2010 there still are no devices that can wirelessly stream Blu-Rays without issue.
Update 11-Feb-2011: Retested with same result. Unable to sustain Blu-Ray bitrates in every configuration.

I tried the wireless route, and did not find the technology quite there yet for VoIP, Online Gaming and HD Streaming. When I stumbled upon the new PowerLine HD products. While this technology has been around for a while, this was the first time it looked mature enough to be "acceptable" in my network. After a little research I settled on the NetGear HDX101's.
This product has performed marvelously. I am using them to bridge various local LANs (PC/Gaming, 360/Entertainment Center)I have in my home to the broadband router. At each HDX101 I am getting at least 100Mbs tx and rx. I then use a switch for each local network to connect all of the networked devices at that location. VoIP, online gaming and normal web surfing all going on at the same time worked great. Streaming media to the 360 from the PC, flawless.
I heartily recommend this product to anyone who wants a fast network and doesn't want to bother running cable through the house.

Roku XDS Streaming Player 1080p Review

Every once in a while, you get your hands on a device that really stands out in terms of ease of use and performance. When I first hooked up my Slingbox, for example, I realized that it was unique and was going to add something truly useful and impressive to my audio-video set-up. When I read a description of the Roku box, I had a similar expectation. Could it be as easy to use as advertised? Would it perform on a level that would really satisfy? Would it be one of those "stand out" devices? Now I can say in all honesty that the Roku player is everything I hoped and more. When the description says you will be up and running in just a few minutes, you can believe it. I opened the box, plugged in the power cord, attached a cable to my high speed router, and ran audio to my amp. I turned everything on and immediately saw the set-up screen for the Roku player. To run a quick test, I tried streaming a video from Netflix--it worked perfectly. This initial set-up and test took no more than 10 minutes. After several days of using the Roku, I have yet to have even the slightest problem. I have added a couple dozen channels and all work as expected. My only moment of hesitation came when I saw how small the Roku player is. It is tiny sitting there with all the other components, but when I saw what it could do, the size became inconsequential. The Roku player truly is an impressive device. While not necessarily a replacement, the Roku XDS Streaming Player is another serious alternative to cable TV. By the way, for those traveling outside the USA, where Netflix does not allow the streaming of movies on your PC, there is a way to connect the Roku player to your Slingbox. You then have access to Netflix through the Roku wherever you have an internet connection.

(More customer reviews)I have the 73" Mitsubishi 738 series DLP TV. I could not get this to connect to my Apple Extreme Router. I kept trying to enter my password and it just did not work would not connect. Then I read on the Internet that you should check your TV's firmware. Sure enough...went to Mitsubishi and found that I was at 12.02 and the latest is 12.07 - downloaded the new firmware on to a usb jump drive as per their instructions. Plugged it into my tv and turned it off. Waited the 30 minutes they recommened and then I went back in and tried to connect and WALA! It worked.
So while this product does work great with the newest firmware... it still is a pain to get it updated without an Internet connection, however, now that I am connected through the TV future firmware updates will be easier and can be done through the TV. Rating this 4 stars out of 5 just because of the hiccup in getting it running.

(More customer reviews)I bought this router to be able to add wired connections to my Apple Airport Express. It worked using bridge mode but it is far from ideal. It occasionally will drop all connections if there is a lot of data going through it. I think this is probably a firmware issue since it never happened with my airport express alone. Also the data rate seems to have dropped - I used to get 30Mbps when my computer was connected via ethernet to my cable modem directly, and around 25Mbps when using my Airport Express alone, but now it has dropped to around 9-10Mbps. It's still enough for my needs but I really expected better from D-link. After an online search it appears that many people with this router are having the same issues, so I don't think it's just because this one is refurbished. I picked this up for $15 so I don't feel too bad about it but in retrospect I would probably have gone for a different router. Not recommended.

While I think the price point should have been closer to $200, I am overall very satisfied with Google TV, using the Logitech Revue box and keyboard. I am an Android phone user as well and the OS used in Google TV is very similar. The set up was easy and intuitive. One note: You do need an HDTV, high-speed internet (wired or wireless), and a cable box with HDMI cable inputs to take full advantage of all Google TV has to offer. And while the box comes with 1 HDMI cable, you will need at least one more. I am not completely sold on using the keyboard to control the DVR, although it is possible. There is a free Harmony app for Android phones (iPhone coming soon, I believe) that is an added bonus.
I won't be getting rid of my laptop, but will be using it a whole lot less! If you use the internet for games, Facebook, searching, shopping, photos, videos, etc., then having quick access to that using the full Google Chrome browser while in your living room, is a no-brainer. I enjoy the integration of my DVR content with internet searching, if I search for "Desperate Housewives" it shows me not only my recordings on the DVR, upcoming shows in the guide, as well as related websites and other references. Neat. I like the Pandora application so I can listen to music through my stereo, surf the web, and watch the local news in picture-in-picture, all at once.
I look forward to having more application options (Google is aggressively pursuing developers to create apps for Google TV like they do for the Android Marketplace). I think a very basic app they should have included out of the box is Weather.com to quickly pull up the local forecast. When an app market is available and as other enhancements are added (updates over the internet), this will soon become the perfect product, until then, it's very fun and I'm glad to have it!

ASUS WL330GE Wireless pocket access point Review

(More customer reviews)I bought two of these, one to use as a wireless adapter and one as a repeater. My primary wireless router is a Dlink DIR-622 running the original 1.11 firmware.
Initial setup is fairly easy. The manual is TERRIBLE but you really don't need it for basic setup. Out of the box, or after a hard reset, the device is in "Gateway Mode" with it's DHCP server active and ready to hand out addresses in the 192.168.1 subnet. Connect it to a PC's ethernet port, open your browser to http://192.168.1.220 and you get the configuration screen. From there, it is easy to choose one of the other (3) modes and make a connection to your wireless network.
If you want to make additional configuration changes to other parameters, it gets harder. Once you switch from Gateway mode to one of the other (3), the device no longer acts as a DHCP server for the ethernet port; rather, it effectively becomes a device with a static IP of 192.168.1.220. To make additional configuration changes, you must open your PC's TCP/IP settings and change from DHCP (i.e., "obtain an IP address automatically") to a static address (i.e., "use the following IP address") in the 192.168.1 range. Only then can you again open your browser and use http://192.168.1.220 to access the device.
I setup the first unit in "Adapter mode", configured it for wpa2 and then connected it to my Dish Network 622 dvr. Everything connected and worked perfectly.
I have a large house with my wireless router at the North end, so signal quality at the South end of the house is poor. I configured the second wl-330ge for "Repeater mode" and placed it near the center of my house. Devices in the South end now get excellent signal quality from the centrally located wl-330ge repeater. Devices that used to get 6mbps now hit 35mbps.
Both my units came with firmware 2.0.1.8, but I noticed a newer 2.0.1.9 firmware on the ASUS web site with 11-23-2009 release date. As it mentioned a fix related to Repeater mode, I decided to download it and update both units. I then hard reset and reconfigured them. The one in Adapter mode still worked just fine. The one in Repeater mode ceased to function; devices would connect to it momentarily then lose the connection. After several hard resets and reconfiguration cycles, I gave up and flashed it back to 2.0.1.8, and it immediately started working again. If you are using Repeater mode, I recommend avoiding the 2.0.1.9 firmware.

(More customer reviews)I run a computer consulting Biz. We constantly are replacing all brands of routers; the worst being linksys, then netgear, then dlink. We bridged two wnr3500 in our shop and ran them for since they were release since they tested best under nearly every condition; but started to get flaky as we added more and more computers. This asus has been running amazingly fast and the wireless signal is the best ever; small net builder . com even ran their test agreeing. Apparently since I purchased our first one of this asus r13u small net builder has removed it from their site for unknown reasons. They even claimed that the linksys dual band 4200 bested this by nearly 20% in signal strength. The 4200 cannot do dd-wrt, repeating, and many other features that this asus can. In fact this asus does everything we can think of and more; minus 5ghz which does work as advertised anyways.
There is much more to say but I can spend more time now.
BEST ROUTER EVER.

Netgear MCAB1001 MoCA Coax-Ethernet Adapter Kit (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)I've been waiting for the Netgear MoCA Kit for awhile now. There were other solutions, but I had high hopes for this model. As it turns out, it was worth the wait.
First things first, installation was a snap. I followed the instructions and all status lights were on and I was able to use a computer on the other end within minutes. Awesome, but now the TVs were not working. I went into the configuration and turned off All Pass and the problem was fixed. There were also options to adjust frequency, but I did not have to go that far. My setup includes a cable box and DVR and the MoCA works great with them. I'll be adding a small switch to allow for connecting gaming consoles and other devices soon.
I have not tested the transfer speeds extensively, although the Adapters are saying they are at 252 Mbps (out of a max of 270 Mbps). I do have some doubts that the speed is that high, but it's not too far off. Files transferred quickly and I was streaming photos, music, and videos from my home server within minutes to my HDTV in the other room. While I did not test all kinds of video file types, I was able to stream 720p and 1080i without trouble and no lag at all. Of course, if you had other devices pulling bandwidth, then it might be an issue.
You receive 2 coax cables and 2 ethernet cables in the kit. However, it would have been nice to have the cables a bit longer. The configuration pages are fairly straight-forward. Although, it requires you to hook a computer directly up to the devices in order to access the setup options, which isn't a big deal because after you get it going I don't really think you will be doing any additional configuration. The lights on the front of the adapters are a bright blue, but you can turn them off by hitting a button on the back. The units appear to stay relatively cool, but do warm up a bit when you are passing traffic through them heavily. It's nothing abnormal though.
Overall, this setup is highly recommended for those that do not want to run CAT5 through their house. The cost is decent and the setup is very easy. The units provide you with an easy solution for providing network access to your HDTV, gaming console, or other devices.
UPDATE 1/2/2010: It's been almost eight months since buying and installing the Netgear MoCA kit and I am providing this as an update to my review. I have been using them to stream media (video, music, photos) from my home server to my HDTV on another floor. I have also added a small switch and an Xbox 360 along with the HDTV. Streaming has been going very well and all internet access to my Xbox 360 has been great. While there are days I have to reset my other network equipment for various reasons, the NetGear MoCA devices keep on trucking. I never have a problem out of them and they are always performing top notch! Still highly recommended.

Showed all Wi-Fi available with signal strength and type, a b g or n (very nice). Works perfectly with my Apple airport,type n.Very easy setup, just followed the prompts. It comes with a 3 ft USB extension cable which made hiding it much easier. Otherwise the dongle sticks out a little if plugged directly into the left side USB port. A bit expensive for what it is, but apparently nothing else will work. PS,there was already a update for the TV that was painless to install.I find Netflix works much better(clearer picture) with this adapter and the Panasonic TV than with my LG 390 blu-ray player.
