(More customer reviews)First I need to thank all of you guys who gave the Linksys cable modem 4 and 5 stars. If it had not been for your reviews I would have sent this great modem back to Amazon.
I spent 6 hours trying to get this modem working, getting help from 4 different techs at AT&T. They told me that this modem was bad and that the cable light needed to stay on and that the Linksys modem would not register with their system. They told me I needed to send it back and get another one. {ALL FALSE} So finally I told them to connect my (their) old modem back up. Their modem worked fine.
As I was getting ready to pack my new Linksys modem up to send it back to Amazon. I decided to try it one more time. Following the exact sequence they used to connect their modem. And would you believe it? It works!!!
My problems:
1. bad tech support.
2. must remove router to register modem.
3. given wrong registration address. (MOST IMPORTANT)
4. computer must be turned off before you turn on modem.
Fool proof procedure to be up and running in 10 minutes:
1. Turn computer off.
2. If you have a router, take it out of the loop. connect directly from your computer to the modem thru the ethernet port.
3. Connect the cable.
4. turn on power to the Linksys modem, allow it to boot up.
5. turn on your computer
6. go to the registration page to register your modem. You MUST do this twice, for some reason it does not work the first time. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT ADDRESS FROM AT&T. They failed to tell me I needed to use "https://" instead of "http://" it won't work without the "s"
enter your account # and registration #.
7. You should be working. Reconnect your router.

Cisco-Linksys Dual-Band Wireless A/G Media Center Extender WMCE54AG Review

(More customer reviews)I really like this product. I really like Media Center 2005. But more than anything else, I LOVE the IDEA of this product -- a networked device that helps unite the living room to the home office, giving you one place to put your pictures, videos, and music. This is a great generation one product. I can't wait to see what the next couple of generations bring.
That said, here are the things to be aware of when purchasing:
1) You need to know (or find someone to help you who knows) the basic fundamentals of home networking and Windows. This is not a completely plug and play installation.
2) You must have a very strong network connection between your Media Center 2005 device and your Media Center Extender. Ideally, you would have a wired connection (i.e., using old fashion cables). But I use the Wireless-G option and it works great now -- but I had to spend a good deal of time tuning the placement of my wireless router to ensure optimal connectivity between PC and Extender.
3) Be aware: TV content labeled as Copy Protected will not play on the Media Center Extender. For me, this means one very bad thing -- I can't watch 99% of the shows on HBO on the Extender. This is very disappointing for our family, because we enjoy HBO and actually use the Extender on our main TV in the house (with the Media Center 2005 PC in our home office). Pay TV channels are the only area we have had problems with this, though, so if you don't need to watch these channels on the TV where you are putting the extender, don't worry about it.
4) There are a few other things you can do on the Media Center PC that you can't do on the extender. Mainly for me--the extender can't play content on your Media Center PC DVD drive (I get around this by first burning the DVD to my hard-drive using a product called Pocket DVD -- a perfect solution to put my son's frequently watched kid movies in a place that's easily accessible).
Overall, if you already have Media Center 2005 -- buy this product--it's really cool to have a central hub for all this content with multiple TVs hanging off it.
If you don't already have Media Center 2005, and are considering it -- I recommend it. But be forewarned that it's still what I would call an "early adopter" solution. Be prepared for a few stumbles and bumps -- but it's sure to wow your techie buddies.

Linksys Ultra RangePlus Wireless-N Broadband Router Review

If you have a simple network, you'll probably have no problem, but steel yourself with plenty of patience if you plan to connect less common devices such as a network bridge.
The CD provided, with its LELA wizard, makes installation and connecting to the internet a breeze, as long as you know which kind of security (WPA, 64-bit or 128-bit WEP) you want. All our computers -- Macs and PCs --connected. Likewise, our iPhones and Wii picked up the wireless network without incident. However, I bought this router to improve video streaming and VoIP which required a connection with a network bridge. The WPA security wouldn't work to get my Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming Adapter online, so we switched to WEP. This process took a lot of patience because the router had trouble identifying the adapter -- and it's made by the same company. Still, the problem may lie with the bridge, not the router.
The four extra Ethernet ports are great for those who have Ooma, gaming consoles, and other hard-wired devices in the same room as the router, and if this is your arrangement , you'll find the set-up and operation, as well as the speed, excellent. Because the range extends so far, it is imperative that users properly configure the security settings. It is completely backward compatible with wireless G and B, although obviously you won't get the N-speed on those devices. The lag time for computers to pick up the wireless network is significantly longer than it was with our Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router, but the internet connection is more steady.
I recommend this router for those who have N-speed internet devices or who need faster, more reliable connections.

Netgear WGR614 Wireless-G Router Review

I have been a happy Netgear customer in the past, and am technical enough to keep both home and small office wireless networks running fine, but this model has a hardware problem that Netgear tech support has finally acknowledged, but for which they are not providing an adequate fix. As others have mentioned, the router will often drop connectivity, and rebooting is the only solution. I bought one, had these problems start (luckily within the 90 day tech support window), and returned the router to Netgear (at my expense) in exchange for another one, which demonstrated the SAME problem less than 24 hours after installation. After yet another long call to India the latest tech support rep acknowledged that lots of these models are having the same problem, and upgrading to the latest firmware (which I did immediately upon installing both of these routers) won't fix it, so her solution was... send this one back (AGAIN at my expense) and they would send me yet another one of the SAME model, which she (for no defensible reason) assures me will work. For more background please see the Netgear tech support forums, where you will see scores of people experiencing the same problem and the same non-solution from Netgear. Save yourself the trouble and buy a different wireless router.

(More customer reviews)If you're here because you're looking to buy a wireless router and you wanted to check reviews on Amazon (and other places) first, you will immediately have noticed one thing: there isn't a single brand/model of router that doesn't have a fair proportion of contradictory reviews. Some people will say "Wow, router X installed in minutes and has worked flawlesslesy since. It's so much better than that piece of crap router Z." And then you read the review of router Z and someone says "Wow, router Z installed so easily - not like the nightmare I had with router X. Don't ever buy router X, what a piece of junk!."
I had a Netgear WGR614v6. It installed okay, although the configuration manager left a lot to be desired - plus it came with UPnP turned ON, even though it said itself that the default setting was OFF! That caused an hour of frustration. But once installed it worked okay for a few weeks, and then it just stopped working consistently. In the same way that so many routers seem to do for so many reviewers on these sites, without me changing any settings in either the router or the machine, it started dropping connections randomly, and constantly needed rebooting. I installed updated firmware - no improvement. I wondered how this could be happening, but then when I started reading user reviews widely I realised that this is apparently par for the course: every brand I looked at has at least one person complaining about this problem.
All of which is a long preamble to say that you'll have to take any review under advisement. I eventually dediced to go with the D-Link because there were more good customer reviews than bad, and because it got some good reviews from magazines (for whatever that is worth these days). I have to say that so far it has been a good purchase. The installation program was very good - extremely clear and well-thought out. I like the Network Magic program that comes with a 30-day trial for free - in fact I decided to purchase it because it makes the network management so easy. The router has performed consistently since I fired it up: strong signal with no dropouts or mysterious lockups.
From MY experience, then, so far, this has been a good product and I would recommend it. But there are no guarantees in the wireless router world.

D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Media Player, Audio/Photo/Video, 802.11g Review

(More customer reviews)My expectations were fairly low after having read all the other reviews, but I really liked the option that you get from adding a home media drive from D-Link to this set-up (DSM 602H/4H). I've been waiting for a media server that doesn't require me to keep my PC running in my bedroom 24/7. The network drive from D-Link and this media server looked like an awesome combination.
In an effort not to repeat everything that's already been said ... here are the things I believe haven't been mentioned yet ... first and foremost, don't expect to spend any less than a solid weekend getting this up and running .. and even after you do I expect multiple hours will be spent updating firmware etc. over the next few months (at least I hope there are firmware updates coming)
The physical connection was easy and intuitive, but getting the player up and running and connected to my wireless network was a royal pain. I tried to use my media drive as it is advertised by D-link, but apparantly that's not possible without a firmware update. Of course, that firmware update is still in beta release ... do I need to say more. It actually royally p*sses me off that D-Link advertise the combination of the media home drive and the media server, before they can actually deliver that option. I wrote a glowing review of the home media drive, but that was before I updated the firmware to enable use with the media server ... after the firmware was updated, I can't access the management interface for the drive for more than one or two pages before the device has to be restarted (read pull power plug and re-insert) .. the drive doesn't seem to stream the media evenly, so every single song comes across with large gaps where nothing is playing ... pictures don't come across in the right format and shows up on the screen in some oddly twisted aspect ratio ... the media server software that's resident in the media drive firmware update apparantly doesn't read ID3 tags correctly either; it doesn't pick up genres, and artist and album data isn't alphabitized
On a slight possitive note, the media server software running off my PC works much better. It streams evenly, ID3 tags seem correct and pictures are correctly formatted. I still haven't been able to stream a single movie across the media server, but that's personally less of an issue for me personally.
Oh, and although I didn't want to repeat other reviewers .. I have to say this ... THE REMOTE CONTROL ABSOLUTELY STINKS ... worst piece of hardware I've ever held in my hand ... period ... and that includes all those awefull Sony-Ericson phones I've tried over the years ;-)

Motorola Surfboard SB5100 Cable Modem Review

(More customer reviews)I have worked a good year solid installing cable modems for Charter Communications in California and I can vouch for the ease of installation (no software is required honestly folks), the reliability, speed, and simplicity of the Motorola Surfboard. It is a class above other modems such as Toshiba, Terayon, D-Link (only customer supplied) and the most dreadful one of all, the Ambit.
Most times we were given Ambit modems to install (about 2 or 3 Ambit for every other type on a daily basis). Most times we had problems that were modem defect related, they were Ambit modems, however, that can't be chalked off to an average likelihood because they were installed more. Now, they failed in high numbers like about 1 out of 4 or 5 before an install could even be completed. To their credit, althought Ambits were what I see as unreliable (drop dead on a dime!), they did stretch the limtis of low signal way beyond cable co specs (+10 to -10 dBs) and sometimes worked (gag) even low as -14dB to (one particular occassion I remember -19dB where other modems could never lock on or would never stay locked on to the two frequencies. Although I can't describe the level of service they would provide at that point of signal degredation as anything better than "beats dial-up" when it would not achieve the "theoretical" maximum speeds of 3Mbps given customers but would get a more lackluster 300-600Kbps. Some customers were happy to be able to get that and more anxious to have that right away than to reschedule for another tech to come later and finish the installation after fixing line problems causing such low signals when it wasn't something that could be found and fixed within the alloted time for the original install.
Our second most installed modem were Motorola Surfboards. While they truly operated more inline with their published specs on signal levels (down to about -12dB usually, -15dB if the stars were aligned), they were definitely more tolerant of noise in my opinion and much more reliable than the other modems we had installed in terms of staying solidly connected and operational with consistent speed day in day out on any good line. The only time I ever had to remove a Motorola from service for a "modem problem" actually turned out to be a bad power supply that failed during installation, not the actual Motorola product itself! I can't say that for any other modem I've installed.
The other modems are usually more stylish, or a bit more sleek, but in my book written by a sometimes frustrated cable technician who has installed, moved, and replaced hundreds of HSCI setups locally, 3 style points aren't worth even 1 reliability point when it keeps customers (or me!) from getting pissed off, so I'd stick with Motorola every time if I had a choice which one to install on any given job because I knew I wouldn't get a bad report or call when others failed just back hours or days after installing them.
I'd stake all my experience in the field with all kinds of setups and problems with Motorola being undeniably the most dependable and functional. They truly are the kings of Cable modem.

Cisco-Linksys Antenna Stand for TNC Connectors AS2TNC Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Linksys Antenna Stand for TNC Connectors AS2TNC along with a Linksys HGA7T High-Gain Antenna Kit for TNC Connectors. I live in Manhattan and wanted to be able to access my wireless Internet connection while in the park outside my apartment building.
I live on the 11th floor of steel, brick and concrete heavy building. I had zero reception from the park outside my apartment with the standard Linksys wireless router I owned - even though I placed it on the sill of a window that overlooked the park. Between the window screen, glass, etc there wasn't enough signal strength to get the connection going.
I figured that I would buy these items as an experiment. I attached the two high gain antennas that came in the kit to this base. I then placed the stand on my external air conditioner and taped it down.
I went out to the park where I now had a straight line-of-sight path to the antenna. My laptop (IBM T40 with internal antenna) had 80% signal strength at about 150 feet - amazing
I figured I would push the envelope a bit and walked in to the park a bit. At 100 yards I still had 50% signal strength. After that the signal strength dropped off pretty quickly. A 100 yards though is amazing. My techie friends are amazed at this range, which far exceeds what Linksys advertises.
I now place the antenna out on the underside of my air conditioner whenever I want access while outside - I have crazy-glued a couple of medium-sized magnets to the base and it holds well.
I am not sure what the range would be without the high gain antennas. Who cares though - the combo of these two items works beyond what I could have reasonably expected.

D-Link DCM-202 DOCSIS 2.0 USB/Ethernet Cable Modem Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this cable modem when I moved into my new apartment because it would be cheaper than renting one from Comcast in the long run. Everything worked fine for about a month, but then I wouldn't be able to connect to anything outside of my local network. Comcast technical support said that from their end it didn't look like anyting was connecting to their network, and my router could release and renew its IP address, so that narrowed it down to the cable modem. Unplugging the modem and plugging it back in would make it work again for 30-45 minutes at a time, but it would cut out at random without warning.
I downloaded and installed new firmware from d-link's website that was specifically for Comcast customers and everything seems to be working ok again, but I know a lot of non-technical people who wouldn't be comfortable doing that. If you are a technically unsaavy person and use comcast, you may want to purchase another cable modem all together.

(More customer reviews)Folks, these antennas, as well as the stock antennas, have an omnidirectional (same in all directions) horizontal radiation pattern. This means that, when installed in a suitable location, the most significant reception gains will be seen with equipment that is on the same level as the router itself. Most of the "these did nothing for me" stories appear to be from people who have the router downstairs and the equipment upstairs, or in the basement. These antennas are NOT designed to improve reception between floors in a home.
2.4GHz signals are heavily attenuated by walls, foil-clad insualtion, and other building materials. Interference can also be present from cordless phones, microwaves, wireless cameras and other gear in this band -- adding an antenna can make these types of issues WORSE. Changing the channel your wireless router uses can help, since chances are most of your neighbors are using the same channel you are. Some routers have a built-in site survey utility to help you locate an unused channel.
If you are having trouble reaching a particular device through several walls, or between floors, try a directional antenna as these will concentrate the radio energy where they are pointed. Some reviewers have pointed to a site that illustrates how to make a directional antenna with index cards, glue and foil -- this is a rudementary directional antenna but will surprisingly provide excellent results in many applications.
In summary: If you purchased these antennas and they did not work or made the problem worse, you need to reconsider the type of installation (multi-floor, multi-wall, etc.), sources of interference, channel selection, blocking materials such as foil-clad insulation, as well as proper antenna selection.

Netgear GS608NA Giga Switch 8Port Review

(More customer reviews)NETGEAR's GS608 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch is a good product with nice clean lines. The one I have actually works flawlessly for my needs. The problem I have is that I have noticed that there is a wide variation in performance depending on the version of the switch that you get. If you have a v1, you will not get full jumbo packet support, thereby limiting you to 20 MBps. If you have v2, you will get full jumbo packet support, but non-windows computers seem to have hardware issues interfacing with the ports. And now that I have gotten to use the version 3 rendition in a Windows only situation, I can say that the performance was good. But I can't help but wonder, what happens when I have to hook up one of my Unix or linux workstations in that room? What if I have to connect a Mac? Will version 3 have the same compatibility problems as version 2? So my main gripe is, why didn't Netgear just scrap this product line and create a new product with a new model number if they new they had hardware problems with different revisions? Those buying from Amazon will probably get version 3, but if you try to buy this at a brick and mortar store all bets are off. Depending on how long they have had inventory, you can get any of the three. So the moral of the story is, definitely try to avoid versions 1 and 2 if possible.
How do you know which version you have? On the bottom of my switch, there was a white sticker with the standard power rating info and random information. Towards the bottom of the text it had the model number with *v3* appended to it, with no spaces. So if you have v3, the actual model number will look like "Netgear GS608v3*. The same goes for v2. I believe that v1 doesn't have any special markings on it, though I don't have one of those handy to verify that.
As to speed and performance, the v3 definitely works great. Each port is represnted by a number on the front of the switch. You will know that it is running in gigabit ethernet mode and connected to a cable if the port is lit up green. So if you see a green 1, 3 and 4, that means each of those ports are in use by network cards that are GigE capable.
Since all three of these are still sold under the same model number, I have to average out the performance of the others with the latest revision. As long as you get the latest revision, you should be OK in terms of features and performance at the higher end of the speed limits of gigabit ethernet. But as for whether or not all the problems with alternative TCP/IP compatibility, I have to test that a little further before I will feel comfortable that they have solved the problems of v2. If that happens, I may revisit changing this rating but until then I think this is a good device that still has some risks associated with it.

Belkin F5D6231-4 Wireless Cable/DSL Router Review

(More customer reviews)I was initially very pleased with this router. It was reasonably easy to set up, although I configured it by hand instead of using the Easy Install Wizard so I can't speak to the quality of the Wizard. The 76-page manual is good, though missing an index.
The web-based interface was very very nice (at first, but more on this later). I was able to enter my settings quickly, and there appears to be a high level of customization possible. This router comes with firewall capabilities that are not necessarily advertised, which was a welcome surprise.
Things worked well for the first day, and the range on the wireless was quite good. At that point I decided to increase security. I disabled SSID Broadcast so that the ID of my network would not be spuriously broadcast...however, a new laptop immediately saw the network. So I'm not sure if SSID broadcast disable works, or if I made some mistake.
Then I tried to filter MAC addresses (which ensures that only specified computers have access to the router). For several hours I tried to enter a list of 5 MAC addresses into the router, but it would not take any more than one! This was a maddening experience. Finally, I decided to try using Internet Explorer to access the web interface, instead of Netscape. Suddenly, it worked. It seems likely that Belkin did not adequately test the product with Netscape.
During the above process, I had tried to check the firmware revision (I have 1.00000000, and no new firmware is yet available). I clicked on the button to check to see if there's an update, and the interface hung every time. So that feature doesn't work right, either, in either browser.
The next thing I did is try to confirm that MAC Address Filtering (above) was actually working properly. I enabled the feature, and removed a few computers from my access list. But they could still access the internet! I then removed all computers but one from the list, and still, no filtering. I called tech support. To give them credit, I only waited on hold a few minutes. But the person I spoke with was clueless. He was probably so used to people having trouble getting the internet to work, that he couldn't process the notion that my problem was that the security features were improperly permitting network access to unauthorized computers. I believe he didn't even know how MAC Address Filtering is supposed to work. When I was finally able to make the problem clear to him, he said someone would get back to me. But that won't be before I return this router for a refund.
In summary: the router has good potential. But the fact that MAC Address Filtering simply doesn't work, and Disable SSID Broadcast may not work either, means that this router is missing at least one of the fundamental security features. There are other firmware problems, too, which don't speak well for Belkin's Quality Control. My advice is not to purchase this router, at least until the firmware is revised.

Had no problems at all getting this unit set up and establishing connections between my desktop and Inspiron 5150. Take it out of the box, connect an ethernet cable between the desktop and router and plug it in. Use your favourite browser to connect to 198.168.1.1 and run through the setup wizard. Then once you've got everything set up, read through the manual, go through the various setup options and tweak as desired. I opted to go with the WPA-PSK authentication protocol because its supposed to be more secure, but if you have other devices that don't support it, you'll probably have to stick with WEP.
It can be laid flat on the desk, or propped up on end vertically using the little rubber feet that are supplied. There are 4 ethernet ports that allow you to connect via 10/100 Ethernet and the WAN port to connect to cable, DSL or LAN. The antenna is on a swivel and can be rotated to just about any convenient orientation.
The only thing I don't like about the router is that it doesn't have an internal clock, so every time it is powered off the router's system time goes back to it's default start value. It can be configured to set the time from an NTP server, but only if it's connected to a WAN network (via DSL, cable or LAN). It's only a minor inconvenience though. The other thing is that the router's web interface only seems to work properly if you use IE. Using Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox sort of works for most things, but not everything.

Wireless-n 300 Router with Dsl Modem Review

(More customer reviews)After doing a lot of study about available options, I decided on the DGN2200 DSL modem. In short, this product is everything it promises to be.
I experienced no problems whatsoever from the moment I took the unit out of the box. Setup was easy and the product worked flawlessly from the start. The speed and coverage is impressive and it is a noticeable jump in performance compared to my previous router with 802.11g wireless. The 802.11n is a huge jump in performance and coverage and my wife "can't believe" how fast our DSL service is.
I did have to call Netgear once to ask how to set up a DSL modem with an ISP who didn't use PPPoe login and password; they were extremely helpful and the wait time on hold was less than 30 seconds. All in all, setup was a snap.
I also set up a USB network drive for backups and the ability to connect a shared drive on the network is a big plus.
If you're looking for a nice bump in performance, especially as it relates to wireless connections, this wireless modem is a great choice.
