Ayrstone AyrMesh Hub Review

Ayrstone AyrMesh Hub
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Purchased this Wireless product and it took some doing placing the antenna on a roof mast and routing the cable down to connect to my office router. So when I got the Internet Signal at our cabin in the trees about a quarter mile away it was truly a rewarding experience.
Despite a clause in the Terms & Conditions for service fees, I was assured by the owner that this was intended for future products and not for the Ayre-Mesh Hub System.
Product Support is excellent and available quickly with some real congenial folks.
Forgot to purchase the cable necessary to mount the antenna so that delayed things a bit, and I have to check into lightening rods and protecting my computer from an errant lightening bolt strike, but guess it comes with the territory.
Another great feature is the ability to separate my home/office network from the public use easily by creating a separate name for the public network.
All in all a satisfying and cost effective solution to extending rural networks.

The AyrMesh Hub is the "building block" for the AyrMesh network. The first AyrMesh Hub (called the "Gateway") is connected to your existing high-speed internet connection (router) and distributes it via Wi-Fi up to half a mile away. Additional AyrMesh Hubs (called "Remotes") can then be deployed as to extend your network even further. All AyrMesh Hubs are automatically self-configuring using information from the AyrMesh Portal. If you are ordering the AyrMesh Hub as a Gateway (the first AyrMesh Hub, connected to your router) or you need to mount it further from your power outlet, make sure you order an Ethernet cable (or make your own Ethernet cable) long enough to reach from where it is mounted to the power supply. Actiontec MegaPlug A/V 200 Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit (White) Review

Actiontec MegaPlug A/V 200 Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Years ago, I purchased one of the first through-power-line Ethernet kits on the market. At the time, the claimed throughput was low (say, 10mbps), and the actual throughput was ridiculously slow. Not to mention the fact that the connection seemed to hang inexplicably with great frequency. In a word: Not ready for primetime, not ready for anything, really...
Fast forward nearly a decade. By now, wireless Ethernet routers are cheap and easy to use and just about everyone has one.
Into this environment, Actiontec has dumped their new MegaPlug "200 Mbps" powerline network kit.
Your first question, and it's a good one, is: "What's the point?" And for many people the answer will be "none, really, in your situation."
BUT there are two sets of people for whom something like this--if it works--is a godsend.
First off, there are those who simply cannot set up something like a wireless router. It's not hard, but there are still a lot of complete tech phobes out there. Think: your Grandparents, or maybe even your parents. Sure, you could go over and set things up for them. But then what happens the first time the router goes down and needs to be rebooted or whatever? Panic calls at midnight are not most people's idea of bonus time.
The second set of people who could use something like this, if it works, are those with wireless dead spots in their homes. There are a lot of people like this, actually. No matter where you set up the wireless transmitter, some places just get no signal, or a very lousy one. Now, you can--if you are technically inclined--set up a wireless repeater to address issue. But it's a bit tricky for most people who don't relish spending their Friday night shopping the halls of Frys, Microcenter or BestBuy. This kit offers a simple alternative to a wireless repeater.
OK, enough on who might want this. On to the more significant question: Does it actually work, and how easy is it, really, to set up.
I'll answer the second question first. It is ridiculously, stupidly, unbelievably easy to set this up. Plug one unit in one wall outlet. Run ethernet cable from unit to your router. Plug second unit into another wall outlet anywhere else in your house. Run either cable from unit to the device you want to talk to router. And you are done. Even if you have trouble figuring out how to open the door of a refrigerator, it can't take you more than 5 minutes to set up.
And how does it work? SHOCKINGLY well. In a three story home with about 20 separate circuits (lines on their own circuit breakers), I was unable to find two outlets that could not communicate with each other at a reasonable speed, and without any disruptions. You aren't going to see 200Mbps in the real world, but I saw between 24Mbps and 34Mbps, depending on where I placed the two outlet plugs. Before you sneer, this compares to a normal transfer rate of about 18Mbps for a GOOD wireless G connection. In other words, the Actiontec kit gave transfer rates that were between 33% and 90% FASTER than wireless G!
I can recommend this unconditionally to those who need an alternative to standard wireless with one caveat (and it's a big one): This kit is quite pricey. It runs over a hundred bucks at the time of this writing, as compared to a good quality wireless G router, which can be purchased for as little as $30. In addition, this kit is good for connecting only one location to another single location, whereas wireless is...everywhere.
But if you can get past the price, this kit is terrific.

Phonex Broadband QX 201 NeverWire 14 Review

Phonex Broadband QX 201 NeverWire 14
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If your wireless doesn't reach the rest of your house (like mine...) powerline is a great solution and these PhonEx units really are pretty much instant plug and play. I was amazed and relieved it was as simple to use as the ads on their site touted and you really can be up and running in less than 2 minutes like they say. (Unless your house is really large and it takes you longer than that to get to the room where you're putting the other extension...) In over 7 months use I have never had a failure with the boxes, speed has been pretty good with a DSL connection, and the best thing is it absolutely completely PC and Mac compatible. I use it in a home office situation where I have PC's, half the people I work with have Macs. You don't need to load anything -- you just plug in, boot up, and you're on. Which is great becuase most of the people I work with just want to turn it on and have it work. They don't wanna load a CD, configure their system, etc etc. My only complaint about the units are they're ugly. Maybe it doesn't matter because they just sit on the floor but still, in this day and age of tech design, they could at least make 'em look a little nice! But kudos to them for making it work so well at least. These are a great, simple, reliable solution to extending your network range. Plug it in (note that you need a minimum of TWO units; one on your router, and one on the other end where ever you are plugging in.) Turn on your computer. Everything works. It's that simple.

Cisco-Linksys BEFCMU10 Ethernet Cable Modem Review

Cisco-Linksys BEFCMU10 Ethernet Cable Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First I need to thank all of you guys who gave the Linksys cable modem 4 and 5 stars. If it had not been for your reviews I would have sent this great modem back to Amazon.
I spent 6 hours trying to get this modem working, getting help from 4 different techs at AT&T. They told me that this modem was bad and that the cable light needed to stay on and that the Linksys modem would not register with their system. They told me I needed to send it back and get another one. {ALL FALSE} So finally I told them to connect my (their) old modem back up. Their modem worked fine.
As I was getting ready to pack my new Linksys modem up to send it back to Amazon. I decided to try it one more time. Following the exact sequence they used to connect their modem. And would you believe it? It works!!!
My problems:
1. bad tech support.
2. must remove router to register modem.
3. given wrong registration address. (MOST IMPORTANT)
4. computer must be turned off before you turn on modem.
Fool proof procedure to be up and running in 10 minutes:
1. Turn computer off.
2. If you have a router, take it out of the loop. connect directly from your computer to the modem thru the ethernet port.
3. Connect the cable.
4. turn on power to the Linksys modem, allow it to boot up.
5. turn on your computer
6. go to the registration page to register your modem. You MUST do this twice, for some reason it does not work the first time. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT ADDRESS FROM AT&T. They failed to tell me I needed to use "https://" instead of "http://" it won't work without the "s"
enter your account # and registration #.
7. You should be working. Reconnect your router.

This product works flawlessly straight out of the box. The installation was a snap. It works best with the small usb extension provided. I use it with an old Dell laptop to connect it to my new D-Link615 router. It connects my network between two buidings separated by a small area of tropical rain forest, a distance of more than three hundred feet, and through three concrete walls.I like the AES encryption for the enhanced security. This has got to be the best product for the price. I was really impressed with the performance..

Netgear MR814 802.11b Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router Review

Netgear MR814 802.11b Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've replaced my Linksys BEFW11S4 router with Netgear MR814, and I have not been disappointed. MR814 has a better range, better user interface, and several features missing from the Linksys model.
Setup was very easy - Netgear setup wizard even recognized the type of the broadband connection I have (PPPoE-based DSL). The manual includes a handy table with settings for many US ISPs. Wireless LAN was also up and running in no time.
I have no complains about the router operation so far. It's does not drop my PPPoE connection, and is generally *not noticeable* - just like a router should be.
Features that make this router stand out in the crowded field of wireless routers: 24x7 tech support and 3yr. warranty, parental controls plus free Zero Knowledge Freedom Personal Firewall software (one-year license for up to 8 computers), and ability to update your dynamic ip address in DynDNS.org database automatically (very handy if you need to connect to your home computer).
The only downside I can think of is the size. The unit is larger than many comparable routers, although it is not as tall as others, and can be positioned vertically with the included stand, or mounted on the wall.

Netgear RT314 Internet Access Router Review

Netgear RT314 Internet Access Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, a note on switches vs hubs. A hub shares the bandwith between connected devices. So, if you have one computer going through the hub to the internet and a second connecting to a third over the lan for a file transfer, they have at most 100mbs total between them. A switch actually routes a dedicated connection for each pair of communicating devices so that they can communicate at full bandwidth. If you've already got a switch, you might want to consider the somewhat less expensive RT311 which is the router/firewall without the switch. If you have a hub, on the other hand, I'd suggest going with the 314 instead, the hub can still be used to allow your network to grow beyond 4 devices (after all, two computers, a laptop and a network printer and you're tapped out with the 314 on its own).
Anyway, this is a great device. I pulled it out of the box, plugged in the wires and everything worked immediately. I'm sharing cable internet between a windows 2000 box and PowerMac (running OS9 and DAVE 2.5) with no problems at all.
It's 4 stars because the web interface is really quite useless. To properly configure this device (including the very cool dynamic dns capabilities) you need to telnet to the box. Not a *big* deal, but still a minor nuisance. There's no reason the web interface couldn't handle these other configuration options as well.
I had considered the Linksys box which is very similar in capabilities, but searching usenet archives revealed that the netgear is a much more reliable device.

Contrary to what many of the reviews say here, the latest version (3.0) of the switch has been redesigned without a fan. The switch is 100% silent. Also, the pictures on a lot of sites of the switch are old. To see the new case go to the linksys site.

If you need an affordable, versatile way to make lightning fast local network connections, the Linksys EG008W Gigabit 8-Port Workgroup Switch is the answer. Get blistering speeds of up to 2000 Mbps with this wired switch, which allows heavy users of multimedia, graphics, video, and other bandwidth-hungry applications to share and transfer large files with ease. Plus, thanks to the technology built into the EG008W you can mix clients that support slower, 10 or 100 Mbps speeds with those that run at full gigabit speeds -- without any speed loss. Simply put, the EG008W is the perfect solution for your desktop gigabit and 10/100 networking needs.
With workstations that support Gigabit Ethernet networking, you'll see amazing speed increases over 10/100 Mbps networks. Connect your clients to the full-duplex ports and see your data traffic efficiency improve several times over. Dedicated bandwidth of up to 2000 Mbps can be attained with the EG008W, making it perfect for graphics, multimedia, and other applications that have to move large files across the network quickly.
A full array of LED indicators are provided on the front of the EG008W, giving you detailed information about the status and performance of the switch:
Power: The power LED lights up when the switch is powered on.
Link/Act: The Link/Act LED blinks when data is being sent or received through the port. When the LED is off, there is no data being transferred through the port.
Speed: The speed LED blinks when that port is transmitting at 1000 Mbps. If the LED is not lit, the port is transmitting at 10 or 100 Mbps.
FDX: If the FDX (Full Duplex/Collision) LED is lit up continuously, the connection made through the corresponding port is running in full duplex mode. If the LED is blinking, the port is experiencing data collisions. Infrequent collisions are normal. If this LED is blinking often, there may be a problem with your connection.
Amazing versatility is built into the EG008W. Simply install this switch in place of your current workgroup hub or switch, and you can network your high-requirement workstations with Gigabit Ethernet speeds, while continuing to service other clients at their current speeds. Or build your network from the ground up, and choose the link speeds that are right for each of the users on your network.
The EG008W is designed to integrate easily with your existing network and you can connect your existing 10/100 Ethernet network to your gigabit server backbone without any additional equipment. All ports on the EG008W are auto-negotiating, and they have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection. This means that you no longer have to fuss with which type of cables you're using, as crossover and regular networking cables are automatically detected. Other advanced features include address learning and aging, as well as 802.3x flow control. Linksys Wireless-G Access Point WAP54G - Wireless access point - Ethernet, Fast Ethernet - 802.11b/g Review

Linksys Wireless-G Access Point WAP54G - Wireless access point - Ethernet, Fast Ethernet - 802.11b/g
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bottom Line: The "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G" represents the best of both worlds; it can meet your need for current 802.11b standards, but still has the flexibility to expand beyond to 54Mbps.
Wireless-G is the next wave in wireless networking technology. Wireless-G WAP's, and Network Interface Cards (NIC's) are capable of transmitting and receiving data at speeds of up to 54Mbps, almost five times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country, and indeed around the world. Wireless-G devices can utilize either the 2.4 GHz or 5.0 GHz band, and some can utilize both bands. Those Wireless-G devices that share the 2.4GHz radio band, can also work with existing 11Mbps Wireless-B equipment, while those which utilize the 5.0Ghz band will interoperate only with Wireless-A (802.11a, 54Mbps) equipment. Dual-band Wireless-G equipment are capable of interoperating with all three protocols; i.e. 802.11a (54Mbps), 802.11b (11 Mbps), and 802.11g (54Mbps).
Enter the "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G Wireless Access Point." The "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G" operates at a frequency of 2.4 GHz, and supports the following wireless protocols: 802.11b and 802.11g (draft). The "Wireless-G WAP54G" can transmit and receive networking traffic in a range of 1 - 54Mbps. I choose the "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G" for three reasons; 1. Because the card operates at a frequency of 2.4 GHz the same frequency band I currently use for my wireless communications; 2. The card is compatible with the 802.11b 11Mps standard, and; 3. Wireless equipment that operates at 2.4 GHz vs. 5.0 GHz have better range; i.e. 100-150 ft. (2.4Ghz) v. 50 - 75 ft. (5.0Ghz)
Installation
Like all of my previous WAP installations, I placed the "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G" high on a shelf in the upstairs spare bedroom closet where it would cover the most area. Upon unpacking the box, the first thing you'll notice about the "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G" is the handsome distinctive rich blue with black accents, color of the WAP inherent to all Linksys products. Another distinguishing feature is dual antennae and a plethora of LED (Light Emitting Diode) readouts on the front panel, which relay vital information to the user, such as connection speed with the wired hub and wireless clients.
Linksys' installation scheme requires that you first install the configuration software onto a computer tied to the wired portion of your network, and then plug the "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G" into the same hub. Once this was accomplished and the unit was powered on, I ran the installation program and configured the WAP. The whole procedure took me less then five minutes to complete. The default IP address is in the 192. range, but it can be changed to conform to the particular IP Addressing scheme utilized for your network. As for me, I use the 10. range of addresses with a 255.0.0.0 subnet. Once the IP address and Subnet Mask are plugged into the "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G", configuration is complete, unless you want to change the name of the SSID (Service Set Identifier); default is "Linksys" or turn on encryption; default is "off."
After the configuration of the "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G" was accomplished I queried it via the ping utility for the next hour just to ensure its continued operation. I then removed it from the hub, and using my spouses workstation (already equipped with a Linksys Wireless-G WMP54G PCI Card, see below for a link to my review of this product), I was able to connect at a full 54Mbps.

First Impressions:
I am impressed! I had read on Amazon.com & Buy.com via user reviews that some had problems communicating with the WAP after the installation process, and quite frankly this gave me pause, but not enough to forgo purchase of the unit. My reservations were unfounded; the "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G" has thus far worked flawlessly.
Under real-world conditions, the "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G" performance exceeds my expectations. So far I have been able to connect to the WAP from anywhere in the house; upstairs or down, at either a full 54Mbps or 36Mbps, and rarely 18Mbps. My laptop has consistently connected at a rate 54Mbps, and it is in the downstairs master bedroom! This comes in handy when I am perched in front of the television in the downstairs living room, but I am still able to surf the web and download files to and from my server and workstation on the second floor! And the signal strength drops off only marginally on the backyard patio; 36Mbps is the best I've been able to do, that is still markedly better then the 5.5Mbps I used the get with my other two WAP's. The Bard is a happy man!
The spouses Windows XP workstation, which is also downstairs just off the living room, connects to the "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G" with a signal strength that fluctuates between ? and full, and a connection rate that floats between 54 - 48Mbps. As for my primary workstation in the upstairs loft; the signal strength is full at all times, and the connection rate is 54Mbps.
The "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G" is capable of automatically downgrading its data transfer rate as the signal from the connected wireless clients becomes weaker, thus maintaining connection. When at the extreme range of the clients the "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G" can downgrade as far as 1Mbps, which is still within acceptable limits for surfing the web and working with documents, but little else, but isn't nice that I do not have to worry about that.
Conclusion:
The "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G" is a phenomenal product. Since installation I have yet to touch it; it just works and works well, but of course time will tell. The "Linksys Wireless-G WAP54G" represents the best of both worlds; it can meet your need for current 802.11b standards, but still has the flexibility to expand beyond to 54Mbps. Can you say no-brainer? I knew you could.

Netgear DS104 4-Port 10/100 Dual Speed Hub with Uplink Button Review

Netgear DS104 4-Port 10/100 Dual Speed Hub with Uplink Button
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this hub as part of a network starter kit (2 PCI ethernet cards + hub) and had no problems installing it. I run both Unix/Linux and Windoze machines and wanted all machines to be networked even with a mix of operating systems running at the same time -- and that meant simultaneous internet access, multi-player games, shared printers, etc. Basically, I wanted the network to do everything, so that any family member could sit down at a machine and do what they needed to do.
The DS-104 hub delivered from the time I installed it until the day I replaced it with a router (RT-314, also from Netgear). Installation was a snap, and as soon as I turned it on, I never had a moment's trouble from the DS-104.
So why did I switch? In two words, performance and price. Although the DS-104 is a fine product, its multiuser performance simply can't compare to a switch (which was built-in to the RT-314 router I replaced it with). I noticed that performance suffered when all of us wanted to use the computers simultaneously, which got me thinking about alternatives to improve performance. I initially intended to replace the DS-104 with a switch. After checking prices, I realized that I could actually purchase a router (switch + hardware firewall) for less than the cost of a switch alone. I eventually went that route, after receiving outstanding service from the DS-104 hub.
So was this purchase a throw-away? Hardly. The DS-104 did what it promised to do, reliably and without fuss. It handles both 10 and 100 Mbps connections transparently, so you don't even need to know the speed of whatever you're connecting. It's well-constructed (metal case instead of plastic) and absolutely reliable. Although I've replaced the DS-104 with a router, I haven't gotten rid of it -- I'm saving it for the day when I need to add several machines to the network and I'm out of ports on my router.
The DS-104 is solid, dependable networking at a very reasonable price. Recommended.

The Netgear DS-104 4-Port 10/100Mbps Dual Speed Hub connects multiple PCs to share printers, files, Internet access, and e-mail communications. You can mix and match 10 and 100 Mbps PCs, servers, and peripherals with this hub, all without any configuration required. The DS100 family combines many capabilities in a compact package and is designed for cost-conscious small-business users.
Each unit has a built-in self-learning bridge that provides the communications link between the 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps network devices. The intelligent bridge automatically manages network traffic so that 100 Mbps traffic and 10 Mpbs traffic do not unnecessarily crowd each other.

Cisco SD2008 8-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch Review

Cisco SD2008 8-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch
Average Reviews:

Signifiant changes have occurred over the life of this switch. Version 1 had an internal fan and was quite noisy, albeit cool running. Version 2 & 2.1 eliminated the fan. However capacitor C251, sitting next to an internal heatsink is prone to failure after 6 - 8 months, resulting in dropped packets and link connections. Version 3.0 has solved this problem with a complete re-layout of the printed circuit board (PCB), with a redesign of the power/voltage regulation. The new version, still fanless, runs MUCH cooler than version 2.1.

NETGEAR WG111T Super-G Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter Review

NETGEAR WG111T Super-G Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although, this is a great deal: easy to setup, easy to install, easy to reset, etc., it does contain many problems.
One problem is that it heats up to quickly, mainly because its through USB, and USB travels really quick, especially if you are running a USB 2.0 port instead of 1.1 port.
Another main problem is that it doesn't function well unless you have a netgear router. I got a new router when I renewed my Verizon contract, and decided to get this so I could network my two comptuers without having to open it up. Often times it says that network is unavailable, even though the adapter is receiving fine. When I bought a Netgear router, it worked flawlessly, but if you don't have a netgear router, its a hassle.
The size is overall good, and you can either plug it in directly to the USB, or have a cord so that you can wrap it around or hang it on the side of your computer. Netgear has great customer support, even though their lines are often full the wait time is long, they are always there.
I've only had one for 2 months, but so far, it really hasn't given me any problems. Just make sure when your not using it, to unplug it, or it will heat up and wear quicker.

Wireless networking is constantly evolving, and the need for increasingly faster speeds and greater range is not only sought after, but expected. If better wireless speed and range with consistent wireless connections is what you're looking for, then NETGEAR has you covered with the WG111T Super-G Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter. With this handy device you'll have no more dropped connections, and you can kiss dead spots goodbye.
If you love all the new media applications, such as video and music streaming, you know you need a wireless connection that operates at lightning quick speeds to keep things running smooth. These new applications are nearly impossible with the old 802.11b wireless protocol, but they are certainly attainable with increased wireless speeds. The WG111T delivers the speed you desire. At 108 Mbps, it is up to ten times faster than 802.11b, and extends your network coverage up to four times more than standard Wireless-G protocol.
NETGEAR also helps you keep it simple with an easy-to-use, intuitive USB 2.0 interface. Just plug the WG111T into the external USB slot of your desktop or notebook PC, and you'll be ready to connect. Plus, you can keep your network private with WEP encryption, and this diminutive device is even upgradeable to the more secure WPA encryption (Wi-Fi Protected Access).
Setup is made quick and easy with the Smart Wizard install software. The WG111T has a compact, pocket-sized casing and with the included five foot USB cable, you can place this device near your computer for optimal signal strength for the best performance.
System requirements include a Pentium class PC, an available USB port, two MB of free hard drive space, and Microsoft Windows Vista, XP or 2000. Microsoft Vista drivers are available at www.netgear.com/vista.

Netopia Adsl 2+ Gateway 4PORT 10/100 Switch Firewall Security Review

Netopia Adsl 2+ Gateway 4PORT 10/100 Switch Firewall Security
Average Reviews:

Bought to upgrade from the adsl modem provided by AT&T (Wisconsin). Setup is easy. Type 192.168.1.254 into your browser. Enter an admin password for the router. Then enter your login and password for your AT&T DSL account. You're up and running in two minutes. If you've forgotten your AT&T login, call (877)-722-3755
--
Update 10/2010
The software appears to be the same as the Netopia 3346 modem, their basic business class modem (not the 3346-ENT, which has programmable software).
I took this router to my workplace to replace our dead 3346. Navigated to the Advanced Setup section in my browser. Configured the port mapping (what they call "pinholes") and ip routing for our needs and was back up and running in 15 minutes. The difference between this modem and the 3346 appears to be that it comes in a plastic case instead of a metal case, and the brand name is "Motorola" instead of "Netopia."
